Fibre: Secunda Community

Here's what you don't get - the fact of the matter is that Secunda is a small little dorpie in the middle of nowhere. Why arn't any of the fibre providers rolling out in places like Plett or the Garden Route, with arguably the highest concentration of millionaires per square kilometer in the country? The answer is backhaul. There is no data center or point of presence in Secunda (or the Garden route), which means that the residents are going to have to cover the cost of that backhaul.

DFA charges R5 per meter. You do the math.

Telkom is the only company with the existing infrastructure in place to provide that backhaul at a reasonable price - your best bet is to try and get them on board.

I have been watching this thread from a distance for a while, but it's getting a bit ridiculous now. Please, help me to understand your allegiance to 123Net - a company who is flat out ignoring you and changing the goals at every turn.

Having said all that, I do wish you guys all the best. I am sadly in the same situation as you are, and wish we could all have fibre to the home, but South Africa does not have the same infrastructure that places like South Korea or Europe or the States have. You can cry and discuss and argue all you want, but I am afraid that 123Net may have gotten your hopes up when even they did not understand the intricacies of what they were getting themselves into.

Since my recent poor suggestion regarding SASOL, I found out that they are the largest corporate taxpayer in South Africa :p

Plenty of towns in SA with 40K+ people.

Newcastle in KZN has a national keypoint - Why don't they have FTTH?

15 mines, with 90% of the workforce living in shacks.

I'm not mocking Secunda, just trying to make a point that the fibre guys are going to take the low hanging fruit first.

And we're just pointing out facts. While I don't like their decision they haven't made any unreasonable demands. They could have dropped Secunda after doing the planning but they didn't. What all of you don't get is that there's a difference between fanboyism as all the Vuma guys are displaying and hoping the only option available to us turns out.

I just said - Telkom is a viable option. Gather interest and approach them. If they are not interested, contact Greencom, Vumatel, Fibrehoods, anyone.

Seems like you are cutting off your nose to spite your face by refusing to even consider Greencom or Telkom or anyone else, and then in the same breath saying all that is available is 123Net.

If Vumatel wants 3400 signups - maybe they have done their homework properly and have an idea of the industry they are playing in. Just a guess.

Or maybe they just want the low hanging fruit as you said and for that reason won't do it. You are also not listening to a single thing said as to why 123Net is the only option. Why do you think Secunda hasn't gotten other fibre providers on board yet but jumped on to the opportunity 123Net offered?

Maybe you should read between the lines here. If the least experienced (and by the looks of it, the most unorganised) company is the only one to show interest in Secunda, then that one saying comes to mind:

If it's too good to be true...

As I originally said, not here to offend, I'm in the same boat. And I don't give a sh*t about Vumatel or any other FTTH company, none of them are willing to roll out where I live.

Just pointing out that your reluctance to hear about anything other than 123Net is counter-intuitive, you should be encouraging every provider you can get.

Not really sure what you are saying here.

I have filled in all the interest registers for all the providers and approached my neighbors over the last year, but with little success.

BUT - I don't bad mouth or favor any of the providers. Maybe one day I will be lucky and get FTTH. In the meantime I am not gonna exclude any options - that's the point I am trying to make.

If yall are so clued up about how things should get done that everyone is doing wrong.

Get off your arse away from your forums and start a fibre company. .because these opinions are nothing more than destructiive
 
Haha, that's the irony. Everyone who's done that have requirements that are far worse with a more restrictive service than 123Net. One has to wonder what's really going on here. ;)
 
I did point out that telkom was supposed to have secunda covered in fibre already about 3 pages back.... and while we are on the telkom topic... Why is ot that they are dragging their feet to het fibre rolled out? I would like to hear your answer to that, since it wont cost telkom half of what the new companies has to pay to get the fibre to the people.
 
Spelling mistakes galore. Please ignore them just got back from a 5 hour drive and typing on my cell isnt fun currently.
