Hi there, also in umhlanga connected with 123net.

Are you getting the 900mbps + speeds when connected directly to your pc or running through your router? If so what router are you using.

We get 100mbps speeds with our Asus dsl68u router, 400mbs with the Mikrotek router 123net gave us but only get the 900mbps speeds when plugged directly into the pc, ie by passing the router.

I am using a TP-LINK archer 2 router, and getting the pull 900mb/s +on local up and down. and around 48-50mb/s international.

Fibre infinity the company advertising above seems to have better prices than 123net #justanobservation

Ok thanks, larry said you were getting that only when bypassing your router and plugging into the pc direct. If i do the same we also get 900mbs, so just wanted to check if your router was capable of 900mbps. Will carry on fiddling with my router settings.

Technically you shouldn't have to fiddle with your router to get what it says on the box. Try to borrow some cat5e cable and test. :)

Congrats again on having such awesome speeds you 2 :D.

thats what i would have thought, but the asus took some fiddling just to get it to work.

Nope. We've addressed this before. They don't.

Only in your mind they don't, but read it carefully, they do make provision by stating:

"In the unlikely event that users' aggregate demand exceeds the available capacity of the network and creates acute congestion, 123NET fibre will employ various techniques to ensure that subscribers continue to have a positive experience. "

That means that they will shape.

Try a different server locally when doing your speedtest.

That means that they will shape.

That is true. But they also dont have any fup so they cant just start shaping at free will.... on the congestion part, fibre doesnt have the same constraints that copper have so it os unlikely to be congested any time soon.

that is very much dependent on the setup they use. If they don't set up the capacity at the POPs then you can get severe congestion.

I will suspect that they want to future proof their network so doubt they will be that dumb, but hey you never know.

True, I would also think that they would future proof it. However, future proofing carries with it a lot of costs. And if you are predicting that you will have to soon replace most of the setup (as is the case with the GPON network they install) would you not rather go for the cheapest possible setup right now, and then spend the money when you do a proper upgrade in the future.

The problem is that they are new, so going for the cheap option rather then a proper network would sink their ship faster then the titanic. They need to build a customer base so that word of mouth could win them more customers and building a network that gets congested in a short time would only give them bad advertising and they dont want that. Gpon is fine and will still be fine a long time from now since few can afford that nevermind the new tech. It also doesnt help you hold out for the new tech and upgrade once it is available, because tech advances so fast that there will be something better on the way already.

GPON is also scalable. Introducing smaller split ratios (32:1, 16:1, 8:1 etc.) can be done relatively easily. besides all that, GPON is also future compatible with XPON (10Gbps backhaul).

That means that they will shape.
What do you expect them to do, give more bandwidth than what's available? They'll reduce each person's speed proportionally if there's congestion. That's not shaping.
