I haven't worked on it since last time since there was talk of someone else already doing it. Doesn't seem like it went anywhere. I can probably get a working survey up within the week.

Guys we need to get people who can actually pay for fibre to be in the survey.

I think why 123 net fell through was the free option. People want fibre but don't want to pay.

We can try putting this together but I doubt we will get enough people who are serious to get it of the ground.

It depends on you mate. I have created a poll on the facebook group. And people vote. But not more than 20...out of 100 odd members. So I'm unsure how to bump the survey to enough people that are willing to pay.

No, I was watching the process as I was watching our own signups and if a resident's association had any involvement they were entirely ineffective. The signups were a few here and there from individuals and not at all like 150 signups in a day that Welties achieved when they got the ward councilor involved. But as others said this isn't about resident's associations.

Agreed, monopoly in the making. If they sense desperation in getting fibre from them, they will adjust prices accordingly.

You missed the essence of my message. The process you use to choose your provider determines the pricing you will get from them.

I know what the message was and it doesn't really apply. Providers don't give preferential pricing to an area just because others are also in the running which is why some like Vodacom and MTN never get chosen. If you choose a provider you must be happy with the prices they charge and 123net's pricing is actually on the good side.

Also remember that Parkhurst went through a whole process to determine a provider who then went back on their proposal and who's prices have since increased as well.

Thing is that at this point we know what everyone offers so it's no longer necessary to go through a RFP like the earlier projects. Secunda should pick a provider that most are happy with and get the signups. If that is Vumatel it would be a third of the residents which is going to be quite a mission considering they couldn't even get the 500 to make 123net happy. Lightspeed wants something like R12k along the route if it's near an access point. That shouldn't be an issue as DFA has one and with the whole community signing up instead of one street the set goalposts becomes much more achievable.

Just because they can't expand in the fashion and time people want them to doesn't mean they aren't serious.

Did you ask them? We did and we were ~100m from an access node, they wanted R60k min monthly. The biggest problem I had was that their goalposts kept shifting, to begin with it was 45k, then 70k then 60k etc. That was about a year ago now though.

Well everyone here that's been quoted figures lately is about R12k per month.

As I see it, their fibre is just laying here and rotting, so if we could convince them to start with the deploying of ftth they could at least make some money from that fibre. Currently they are getting zero money for that fibre just waiting to be used.

DFA doesn't have any FTTH products. They charge around R5k/month for a business connection.

I don't know because they haven't yet indicated any real FTTH products. They'll install a business connection to your home but I haven't seen anything priced in the range of FTTH.
