Fibre: Secunda Community

If you look at Vox telecoms site, they also provide FTTH service over DFA to parkhurst, that indicates FTTH installations.
I did email Vox to find out more about their service, they offer nice packages, the one that stands out for me is 100MB/s with 300GB cap for R749... to me that is a great deal

I've browsed all the packages. And to no surprise telkom...charges R650 for a 10mb fibre line and a 50 gig cap.. daylight robbery.

DFA offering a 50mb line with 100gb data @ R499 for the first three months then R599 thereafter.

Telkom offers uncapped LTE @ 90mbps for R599.. dafuq.
Let me tell you that I've personally seen someone pull 300Gb down on this lte package within 5 days.. and the downrate is about 2.1mb/per second. Not even full 9mb/ps due to signal. Latency on it ranges between 19 and 40

I couldn't even get my Telekom contract cell phone to connect to telkom
 
So how many of us are there that are begging for fiber? Has anyone placed an add or letter in the local paper? What should we put there? Links to this forum? Links to the Facebook page? Contact number? 123net's page? is someone organising action group for ftth?

Probably not, since the belief was that 123net would go ahead or at least speak to us. It will also cost money. Once we get the ball rolling on the website I'll speak with some of the papers to find out what it will cost and take it from there.

I would suggest information about fibre and also the website address (when it's ready). I'll do some mock-ups for an ad and get input when ready.

I think @Alex$The$Alien was the main peanut who orginised the 123net thing. Don't know if he's still keen on running things. For now I am busy with some stuff around the website and such, but we'll need someone to keep it all together. Everyone doing his own thing will not work.
With that in mind: If you have another survey, interest sheet, group, etc. please point them to the website survey. This should be our consolidated place for all inputs. http://www.secundafibre.co.za/interest

I will spearhead this thing as much as I can.

I have a pretty good idea.
If we have one place to go. That everyone can reach and deliver an input. Because not everyone uses reddit or mybroadband

If we can build the secundafibre website in such a way. That people can all go there. A comment system would also add interactivity. and those little share to fb and twitter buttons you see with counters.

The more awareness we can build in a community as a community the better chance we have of bringing the fibre to us.

I read an article on mbb that telkom is going to migrate over to ftth with their current speeds and the same pricing on a better quality line..we can even try going with that approach if all else fails.

You guys can also do a open access community project, that is if you can find someone who shares the vision and has access to a deep pocket or two...remember it's basically about digging trenches :) The rest is easy in comparison.

I created a TEST survey last year to get inputs and comment. It seems people completely ignored what I asked and just spread the test on Facebook as a final - I never received any feedback or comments from anyone. So that's disappointing

This ( http://www.secundafibre.co.za/interest ) is the official survey, but I suspect some damage has been done since people already completed the half-done test.

From what I see on Facebook everyone is just doing their own thing. Is there any structure? There needs to be specific roles if we want to do this.
There should be one point of contact (Person) for all Secunda Fibre vendor related activities. Ten people calling various vendors and asking different questions without the same information will not help us.

I created the survey since it seemed like this is what was wanted. I discussed with Alex$The$Alien whom I had assumed was leading this effort. (Chairman as it were)

Let me ask this, perhaps someone can ask on Facebook as well.
- Do we want/need the website www.secundafibre.co.za ? (For now only the survey is live - Which was already hurt by the spreading of the test site, but it's there none the less). If no one wants it I am not going to waste time building it.
- Who is running the show or are we just going to take a wild west approach and see what happens?


My opinion is that the decisions and "work" should be done structured and formally by a few people and not on a public forum where everyone can find fault with every thing. Public input is important, but I am sure many of you know that the anonymous internet is not the one (collective person) you want to make decisions. - Yes, this is a public forum and I am posting it here, but I don't know who to address so there it is. Feel free to ignore this post if you want.

Please take this post as intended. I am not being negative or destructive. I want this to work. At the moment I just don't see any structure or any clear plan/direction.

Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss or destroy me. As I implied above, I don't find public internet debating very conducive. It more often than not becomes a toxic pool.


So in short Vash, no it is not the same survey as was posted on Facebook earlier since this one only became live in Feb.

It is a good idea to have a few select people to lead the way. With that said, the few select people should have the knowledge needed and should not be bull****ted by the company's. They must also keep the rest up to date on the progression, not just dissappear and not heard off ever again.

The website is also a good idea, but the most important thing on there should be the advantages of fibre over copper. It should be easy to understand since most people is BC (before computers).

How many people must complete the survey befor it could be taken to the suppliers? Once the site is fully up and running we could advertise it.

No one is going to throw stones at you hawky358, you made valid points, but I however feel that public discussion is needed to see the good and bad of every point, people are toxic by nature and there is nothing we can do about it except ignore it and move on.

We can get allot of help from other places that already did what we are attempting here.
 
OK. Thanks. Looked similar and was having trouble filling it in on cell. Will do it just now on pc. I kind of feel the website is a good idea. But also feel it might be a bit of overkill. But then again not everyone like Facebook. I just signed up for it to get free perks on a game I was playing. I don't really have too much time to be involved but would help if I can. Just don't want to be a leader in the action group. I think the website is a simple address for people to find, and since the survey is running maybe we should spread the word on getting people to fill it in. Like friends, family, Co workers etc

@hawky358: If structure is what you want then facebook is the last thing you should be looking at. It's good for extra promotion but nothing else as its conversions are extremely low and people all want to do their own thing. I wish I knew all that when I started. Also most people are either not on facebook or don't use it at all. Facebook is notorious for lying about their real stats and even the advertising stats they give about thousands of potential reach seems to be only a few dozen people.

I would say running everything from a main website is the best approach and then perhaps do an ad in the local paper to make everyone aware but then you need several sponsors.
 
Facebook is good for creating awareness which will translate into demand. If we need capital let's do a kickstarter campaign. I agree that the website would be the main potato but we need the other veggies too.
