Fibre: Secunda Community

Uhm I just saw something that might be the reason why no one wants to help us with fibre.

They actually think Secunda is much much bigger than it realy is.
If you go according to this https://census2011.adrianfrith.com/place/866006 then Secunda is apparently Area: 173.71 km²
Population: 40198 (231.41 per km²),Households: 10292 (59.25 per km²), but that is just not true. That census includes places like Sasol Secunda, Holfontein, Winkelhaak Mines, Secunda SP2 (https://census2011.adrianfrith.com/place/866006021), and Secunda SP3 (https://census2011.adrianfrith.com/place/866006002) all that should not be included with Secunda. That adds up to roughly 151km² that should not be counted with us.

They think they must do so much more digging, when it is just not true. =P.
Thanks I failed to get this kind of detailed information from StatsSA website.

If any one sees opensource vans in the area let me know i will go directly to them, dont be scared to approach them, i'd say they can only tell you they cant tell you, they are obviously planning something but with them digging in x22 back to the center of town im afraid the out skirts will be ignored again..... Why you no Likey X22, did we touch you in your area ??

looks like its just VDSL but at least theyve started #hope so not fibre yet...... i dont know how i feel about this

That map is confusing.... seriously!! Blue apparently is going live with VDSL up to 40mb/s in 3-6 months, but it is scattered.... Well that new shiney white boxes must mean something. I saw a Openserve bakkie today when I went to Spar, but did not have time to go and assault him with a barrage of questions, since I had to come to work.

The lack of info is sad!!

I spoke to a guy at 1 of the new boxes about 2 weeks ago. The fibre will be from the exchange to the boxes, but apparently the line speeds will be quicker on the copper, because the stream doesn't have to travel as far on copper as it used to. And the boxes are bigger, because they are installing some sort of cards in it. I'm assuming to help make the ADSL quicker.

yeah, they here to make the VDSL available over a larger area but still serving the area around the exchange first

I think they are focussing on the edges of Secunda now, since the majority of their problems comes from those clients. If you look at their map you can see that they color coded it, and the blue areas are to be VDSL ready in 3-6months (yipee, better speed then 3 meg). Now if we only knew when they will finish, I really want a 20meg line =P, even if it is telkom and not fibre....

What is the status of Wireless in Secunda. Any WISP's who have Metro Ethernet links ?

ive been in contact with open serve according to them they are prepping for fibre but no dates yet

I spoke to one aswell on friday, but he said there is no plans for either fibre or vdsl.... I just dont know who or what to believe anymore.

So 2017 and no news from anyone yet? Sad sad sad....atleast we are closer to the year 3000 when maybe something might happen.

I heard rumours that they are digging fibre to the homes trenches in x22 from the middle box close to the superette but it is unconfirmed but box should be up and running soon as a vdsl area box, plans to start on the box closest to the x23 area in a few months

So Telkom is hard at work digging up Secunda to get the fibre to the nodes/boxes. Spoke to a Telkom employee today at the box where my line is connected, he said they have to be done in my area over the weekend, that is some good news, we still have to wait and see though if it will make a big enough difference to actually mean anything, I just want atleast 20mb line.
