My current setup is an inconsistent 2mb ADSL line. I had Telkom techies in my house today (unrelated to fibre but I asked anyway.) Apparently my house (Randpark Ridge) is set and ready to receive fibre. So a few questions:
1. Telkom is the fibre provider in the area. I therefore assume that I have to go with them as my line provider. Correct?
2. Can I get just the "line" portion of fibre from Telkom and use another ISP to provide the "data" portion? Kinda the same way that ADSL works. Telkom's data bundles are expensive so I'm currently with Afrihost and I'm very happy with their product and service, so I'd prefer to stay with them.
3. There are providers out there who seem to indicate that they can provide the last-mile "line". How does this work? Surely since Telkom has invested in and laid the infrastructure, they're entitled to the income from residents? E.G. Telkom wants (just made-up figures) R1,500 for 100mbps line, but provider xyz only wants R900 for 100mbps.
My biggest cause of confusion ATM, although I am thrilled to hear I can get fibre in a week or so, is Telkom's website. It seems to bundle the "data" with the "line". There's doesn't seem to be a "line only" option from Telkom. Is this just the way it works or can I maneuver around this? I don't want to get into 2-year contracts.
