Currently - my incoming fibre line is connected to the WAN port on my older ASUS DSL-AC52U. The wifi is disabled as I don't use it. The whole setup is now on an open wall (minor renovations in progress) - with the asus router taking up quite a bit of space.

I was wondering whether it would be possible to remove the ASUS router - plug the incoming fibre to ethernet directly onto my LAN - and run a router/firewall via a docker container, or on my microserver (on the otherside of the house) - or is it best to have some sort of physical disconnect between the networks?

I thought of getting the Ubiquiti Gateway - but - thought it might be possible to use what I already have, and reduce the clutter

I can’t tell which ONU you have there. But most FNOs have some sort of MAC rate limiting. This means exposing your LAN to this will most certainly trip some sort of limiter/filter.

What you’re suggesting can work, but you’ll need a dedicated VLAN to ensure the ONU only learns your virtual router/docker server’s MAC. Otherwise using the LAN cable between your fibre ONU and the other side of your home as a dedicated WAN cable.

I would not put the fibre onto your lan without seperation, if your FNO misconfigures the VLANS etc people may be able to see into your network (there was a thread on here sometime about this happening)

i see you sold the bar  when are you putting in the fireplace?

Haven't sold it. It's now sitting on the patio (covered) in pieces.

Being stuck at home - thought I might as well start preparing. Aiming to put the fireplace in at the end of May - still undecided which one, and where to put it.

Yeh, the idea would to definitely be to have it on its own network.

This happens
Funny to open Winbox and seeing a bunch of other Mikrotik Routers pop up
