Hey folks

I'm looking at buying a used car and have narrowed my search down to these 2. Either a 2013 Fiesta Ecoboost Trend with 23k km, or a 2010 118i with 45k km on the clock. I drive less than 10k km a year, and fuel economy isn't a major factor for me. I'm looking for something that's very reliable. I'm slightly hesitant to go for the ecoboost because I have had some bad luck with turbos before (An old 2006 1.5 tdi) and I've heard Ford are quite ****ty with their warranty payouts if something does happen to bugger out.

If anyone can chime in on this, I'd really appreciate it
Thanks!

2 very different cars in different classes.

Personally I will take the Fiesta, but the km's is a bit high for a 2013 IMO.

The mileage for the Fiesta is bang on National average for a 2013 model, so that wouldn't worry me. The car should also still be under factory warranty and maintenance/service plans, which is a very big plus.

The BMW might be nice to dream of, but a 4 year BMW which is out of any factory assistance, unless an extension was taken out, and then it would only be for another year if you are lucky.

To me it's a no brainer decision...;)

Not to mention the cost of replacing run-flat tyres on the BMW!

Is that old shape BMW?

If its old no, if its new yes. New 118i is a really nice vehicle but as others have mentioned will be more pricey to fix although these days everything costs a fortune.

Old shape or new shape makes no difference when it's 4 years old and out of plan, I'm afraid.

That is true but the new shape is so much better. I'd take a chance if its the new shape, no ways for the old one.

Two totally different cars, sounds like you're not quite sure what you want out the car, or you're trying to decide between two good deals you've found.

If you're looking for something very reliable, go for a Honda or Toyota (or even Subaru). The Japs don't break nearly as often as the competition. Considering an out of plan BMW isn't the smartest thing if reliability is paramount.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

@Fazda, the Bimmer has a 5 year motorplan, so it'd be covered for 12-15 months.

@TehStranger. I disagree. I have a good idea of what I want, and that's a nippy, safe car. The Jazz is far too boring, the Auris is out of my price range.

The BMW does have a lot more goodies and is noticeably a class above. But like mentioned, cost of spares and tyres etc..

Seems nothing will suit me better than the little ecoboost!

How much is the 2013 fiesta ? and how much is the BMW? have you had a look at the suzuki swift sport - you could proberly get a brand new model for the same price - go test drive it

I'm so glad that sanity has prevailed! :p

I see too many sad cases of people buying "up" to a BMW or Merc and then suffering the consequences - it may have 12 to 15 months of Plan left, but that simply means that you will have to K & B 12 to 15 months down the road, at which point you will battle to trade it in for a decent price, BECAUSE the plan is up.

It always bites you in the end...:)

The same price.

I'm not interested in something with just 2 airbags, thanks though.

Our ideas of nippy differ, but if safe and reliable are paramount, what about a Honda Civic hatch? The Sedan is far from great, but the hatch is great.

What is your budget? That will probably help us give more accurate advice.

How do you define nippy then? Is the BMW 2.0 sluggish?

R180k. Don't want anything smaller than a 1.6, unless it's turbo'd, or with fewer than 6 airbags, and nothing with more than 50k on the clock.

The Civic just looks so terrible - seems decent. What's the running costs on them? I've heard Honda spares are crazy.

Difficult question, as "nippy" can be used to describe a Fiat 500 1.4, as you can "nip" around town in it, and performance is very good as it has 75 kw and only weighs 900 odd kg. It can also be used to describe any smallish performance car.

Bottom line, is, what you are looking for in your car - the BMW is certainly not sluggish, but it's not a "nippy" little car....

What, you mean the BMW 2.sl0w? ;) Yes, it's sluggish, but like I said two different ideas of nippy. Civic (also sluggish, but looks better) could be your answer:

2.2 diesel with balance of plan, low mileage

2011 model 1.8 petrol model, spanish gearbox

Not bad

Probably my pick of the bunch

Yea. Ok perhaps a better descriptor would be "not-slow" Hahahhaha :D
