I'm in a situation where I have data in two locations with almost identical folder structures and file content.

Anyone know of some GOOD freeware I can use to compare the files and folders in the two location so that I can easily move the newer data over to the the correct location before deleting the duplicate. Hope that makes sense! :D

Cheers,

Thorin

Get something like Total Commander [Windows Explorer replacement]. One of the built in functions are Syncing files/folders/subfolders by content/dates [whatever you specify]. It will basically show you which files differs , which files exists/does not exist in the one folder but not in the other folder and then you can choose which files must sync/copy across/replace/delete etc.

Best thing about Total Commander is it has 2 panes [where explorer only have one], so you don't need two windows open to copy and paste etc etc. This include the "compare by content" where it will show you 2 files next to each other showing the lines inside that differs etc

Other features i use often is the "file info" tool which can even show the dependencies of an exe [i.e the dlls it needs etc].

It's not freeware, but shareware ($34), worth a shot :http://www.wincmd.com/

Anyway if you happen to download the demo , on the menu select "Commands" -> Synchronize Dirs .

Or, install cygwin and use rsync (link to Windows standalone installation).
