File Server Chassis

Ok I tried Landmark first, but they have some kind of funky going on with their billing system, and I'm not in the mood to hassle. So I went to Sybaritic.
Even tho the unit price was a little cheaper at Landmark, it was still almost R100 cheaper in the end at Sybaritic
The only thing with them is the delivery. They say "From dispatch to your Door by 12h00 the following business day. Applies to JHB major centres only."
They don't tell you that the dispatch can be two or more days later. A little annoying, but ah well. Something I hoped to get tomorrow now looks like the end of the week.

The CM HAF 932 or HAF X also work well for a NAS / File server. caters for up to 12 drives if you use a 4-in3 device. I currently have 8 drives in my server with space to expand...

All depends on the supplier they are getting it from. It should be sometime tomorrow I rate, or at least the day after your payment has cleared they will start the process.
But give them a shout and just see if you cant collect during lunch break the moment it arrives. Saves you having to wait for the Courier guys to get it, take it back to their HQ and then dispatch it and what not.

I would love to, but they are in Strijdom Park and I am in the far east rand :(.
I will wait. It kills me because I am incredibly impatient, but I will wait.

Hehe, you can always do what I did once with the SAPO, hired a courier company to pick it up from their distribution centre and take it 5km up the road which magically had taken the SAPO 10 days not to do :P

:( I'm moving all the stuff over to the new case and now the psu cables are not long enough.

What psu should I get for it?

Edit. I'm thinking of getting the Gigabte Odin 750w... How do I know that it will have cables long enough?

That's the problem with full towers... I planned ahead when I bought my haf-x and bought long lian-li sleeved sata cables, mobo 24 pin power extension and a cpu 4 pin power extension cable. That allowed for beautiful cable management as the extensions are decently long enough to route cables around the backplate with space to spare :)

Speaking of 4-in-3 devices, how did you manage to change the fan in front of the device Topca7? I took off the face plate but the fan is held in by those plastic clips, I pulled on the fan but didn't wanna break the clips so I just left it (the blue clashes with my all red setup :()

Hay monkey, still have more hdds then you need I see, managed to cram 9 into my scout storm the other day :P

Yeah same as what I did, got a nice new power supply and low and behold the 4/6pin was too short to reach. Luckily had ordered a bunch of sleeved cable extensions from PPC just for some modding and those came in handy.

@Madmas, if you looking at a new psu, Ive heard (never owned one so going on other ppls word here) the corsair enthusiast series have cables long enough to string a Christmas tree. So might want to look into that. Otherwise extensions as robdutch mentioned....

@robdutchmonkey, Was easy to get the fans off. If you look at the back of plastic clips it works like rivet So all you have to do is get screw driver, push the pin back out of the piece that expands at the end and pull them out in the front. Change your fan, and push the thing back in. Easy as pie :)

I'll try that as soon as I have to remove the thing from my case thanks :) All this talk is making me want to get a case that can hold more hdd's :( If I get another sunix sata 4000, I could fit 14 instead if the 11 I have but not in this case, externals are now starting to build up

I bought an Evo 830, picked it up 2nd hand for R650, managed to get 12 hdds in 4in3 modules and can fit one more with a bracket or a 5.25" drive. Its on wheels and wireless so whole house gets access to lovely series and HD movies ^_^ Then 9 hdds in my scout atm. And now Xpred to fill :/
Yeah I got over externals real quick, the moment you decide to build a self above your desk to put all the externals on you know you have gone to far :P
How did you manage to get the sunix 4000 to work with 2tb drives? I have to unplug the pci card then put it back in when its in windows. Works 100% when drives are 1tb or lower.

I did buy it from someone who said they flashed to the latest bios so works fine with 2TB drives. If you want I can always try to find out from him what he did. I got it from a guy off carbonite, username ara

Right-o, think I remember that thread. I recently downloaded all the latest updates for the chipset, so will give it a bash, wasnt sure if it would work. And am just lazy :P

Word of warning - cramming high-performance HDD's into a chassis without adequate cooling will lead to HDD toasties.

Not nice to have.

Ok, I had the same problem not too long ago.
Problem I had was I already had 8 drives, but needed more!
Buying the bigger case would just give me space for 2 to 4 more drives.
Not really worth the effort and money!

So finally I settled with this... http://www.chyangfun.com/pro01_2_3.asp
Just add the extra card and bob's your uncle.
I currently have it fully stocked with drives and the 2TB drives have no problem.

Only bad thing about this is that you can not mix raided drives and normal drives in the same enclosure.
You either have to raid them all, or have them all seperate.
On avg I get about 80MB/s from each drive, so I am more than happy.

Look here for suppliers and pricing, but I am sure you can find it cheaper if you have contacts... http://www.pricechec...rch=CFI-B8283ER

Now these look interesting.... I will keep my eye on these I think, they'll make nice birthday presents for my forthcoming server rack at home.

Currently using this case for my storage device at home. Has room for 12 drives (3 bays with 4 drives each). Each bay has a 120mm fan to keep the drives cool. Using 'green' drives hoping to benefit from lower temps and less power. Server setup in headless operation using Fedora and Amahi Home Server.
