Hello

I have a client with a film production company that needs to upload his presentations (images, videos etc) for his clients to download. He used to do this via FTP but he now actually wants a type of a CMS with a user interface where his clients can log in and download the files.

So, I'm looking for something (CMS) that'll be efficient, act as a type of a file-sharing (repository) site with a user-friendly interface.

My first suggestion was Wordpress, but is it even possible to restrict access to certain posts or pages to certain user roles?

Any suggestions?

Thanks, but it says your details failed for login.

I'm going to install the free version and see how that goes.

If you wanted you could do this with WordPress I am sure. There is a add-on called UAC (user access control) which can control access to pages. I have used it and have had no complaints

Very much, look at http://sarugbystats.co.za/upload/ which I did for SA Rugby. PHP code with Smarty TPL templates. PM for username/password if you want

Nice work! This is going to be my first preference.

That's what I was looking for as well. But if I don't come right with what IT Cynic suggested, I'll give that plugin a try.

Joomla + DocMan ?

I love the sound of Joomla, but one thing I find frustrating is the Sample content that needs to get removed and modified everytime i wanted to build a site in Joomla. The menu, section and category sections always seem to throw me off-course. I get confused with how it all gets put together. I'm a total n00b in Joomla.

So, install Joomla without the sample content :)

Funny. I always install sample content to help me figure out how the section menu manager and categories work together.
Without it as examples, I'd be completely clueless.

Okay, having issues with filestore. I got it up and running and everything but when I logged out to log in again, it told me the user doesn't exist. After I specified and changed my Username and Password under Admin profile. Also the license check thing tells me it's an illegal license?

@ IT Cynic: Plus, how would I go about customizing the look like you did with the Rugby site?

** Managed to log in... but when I want to upload a file it tunes me "Sorry, you do not have permission to upload files." --Aaarghh! - I'M ADMIN, OF COURSE I HAVE PERMISSION TO UPLOAD FILES! haha

Creating a website that allows uploads isn't very difficult. Could be done in a day. That said, make sure you download a copy of whatever CMS you wish to pay for. Last time I was experimenting with a fairly powerful CMS that met all other criteria, you could set the upload file size limit but in reality it couldn't deal with files greater than 500mb or something on that order. Yeah I know over the internet that is huge but we were working an intranet (100mbit LAN). It caused the "upload manager" to crash (which was written in Flash).

Have a look at http://www.upoint.info/cgi/demo/fs/index.shtml I have a number of clients using this. Customizable and very configurable.

Try the free version first and if you like it buy the full version for the extra benefits.

You can login to my site @ http://access-za.com/upload if you want and play around there. Username guest_08 password guest_08

I dont think it will be smart using that CMS... lol

HAHAHA! Fail.

Seems like I'm going to have to put my "eagerness to learn" to the test and give Joomla! a go...

Seeing as you are also in Cape Town I will give you a hand with FileStore. I have PM'd you with my Skype details
