WASHINGTON - Dramatically hardening the U.S. reaction to Iran's disputed elections and bloody aftermath, President Barack Obama condemned the violence against protesters Tuesday and lent his strongest support yet to their accusations the hardline victory was a fraud.

Obama, who has been accused by some Republicans of being too timid in his response to events in Iran, declared himself "appalled and outraged" by the deaths and intimidation in Tehran's streets — and scoffed at suggestions he was toughening his rhetoric in response to the criticism.

He actually did it. A week late and even behind the European leaders lke Merkel, Sarkosy and Brown he gained a pair and made a stand. Well sort of since he still tried to leave the appeasement door open so maybe he's up on one leg. Unfortunately for him that door just shut in his face :o

Here is the one immutable fact of President Barack Obama's foreign policy agenda as it relates to Iran: It's over. The rule book he came in with is as irrelevant as a tourist guide to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

If the forces of reform and democracy win, Obama's plan to negotiate with the regime is moot, for the regime will be gone. And if the forces of reform are crushed into submission by the regime, Obama's plan is moot because the regime will still be there.

Politics and decency will simply demand that the world condemn or shun the regime of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei if they come out on top. Even the most soulless realists will be repulsed by the blood on the regime's collective hands.

Before June 12, Obama's eagerness to negotiate with Ahmadinejad -- ridiculed by his conservative critics -- was hailed by the establishment and the left as proof of his high-minded faith in diplomacy, a healthy antidote to George W. Bush's allegedly close-minded approach. But now, if the clerical junta prevails, anyone who shakes hands with Ahmadinejad will have a hard time washing the blood off his own hands.

For some reason, Obama cannot fully accept this. In his news conference Tuesday, the president finally condemned the outrages in Iran in terms he should have used a week ago. But he also kept alive the idea that the current Iranian regime could be a fruitful negotiation partner, despite what has already happened in that country. "It's not too late," Obama said, for the regime to negotiate with the international community. He wouldn't even cancel plans to invite Iranian officials to 4th of July barbecues at U.S. embassies. That amounts to tacit approval of the bloodshed and fraud that we've already seen and acceptance of the ultimate triumph of the regime. And it won't work.

According to many analysts, Obama is still clinging to his hope of talking Iran out of its nuclear program. That's why he initially said there was little difference between Mir Hossein Mousavi and Ahmadinejad, and why his recent denunciations only followed similar rhetoric from the Europeans and our own Congress. He just doesn't want to let go of the diplomacy option. Obama has also made it clear that he sees the elimination of Iran's nuclear problem not as a stand-alone priority but as part of his Middle East two-step. His inseparable goal is to also push Israel into a peace settlement with the Palestinians.

Obama promises to negotiate away Iran's nuclear program in return for Israeli movement on an Israeli-Palestinian settlement. In effect, Obama would be using the threat of a nuclear-armed Ahmadinejad as a Medusa's head to petrify Israelis into concessions. Whether such a strategy would have worked is open to huge quantities of skepticism. Now, after what has happened in Iran in recent days, such a plan is simply impossible.

For years, conservatives have said that the Iranian regime can't be negotiated with. Some emphasized that anti-Americanism is at the core of the regime's identity. Some noted that Obama-style "open-handed" overtures to Iran were rebuffed.

Others pointed to the messianic and conspiratorial zeal that animates Iran's clerical junta. Many invoked Iran's steadfast animus toward our ally Israel as well as its sponsorship of "scholarly" Holocaust-denial and the more tangible support for Hezbollah and others bent on murdering Jews. Iran's efforts to derail democracy and stability in Iraq by supporting attacks on American troops is also part of the talk-is-folly brief.

None of that was sufficient evidence for Obama, in part because anything associated with Bush's freedom agenda was deemed absurd and ideologically rigid.

Well, Bush is gone. Obama has extended his hand. And the regime is supplying fresh evidence of the absurdity of his approach. All that's left for Obama now is to abandon his own ideological rigidity and start over
.

We know you guys would have preferred a more belligerent US prez like McCain.
You 2 have shares in the arms industry by any chance ;)

Yes, rather sit back, say and do nothing..
Seen how "quiet diplomacy" has helped the 1000s in Zimbabwe?
Seen how Aids denial helped the lives of how many 1000s of South Africans?
What would you have said had the world kept quiet, and not pressured the apartheid goverment?

I would suggest that AIDS denailsim and Quiet Diplomacy are two very different things.

And also you do know the world took forever to enact sanctions?

They may be different things, but they're equal in not push for action for the purpose of helping people sooner rather than later (as per your second point)

Fair point.. I wonder how many people that were killed by bombings / state forces could have been saved had the pressure come earlier?

Agreed, hey I know ....lets go hug a tree and tell the terrorist regimes that we love them and wanna be friends, that should work.

yes, by your logic, there shouldnt have been any sanctions against apartheid.
quite amazing how quickly forget that the world was not silent or "quietly diplomatic" against apartheid.
Dont get me wrong, I'm not saying "just drop a bomb" there as a solution.. but i don't think doing nothing is helping either .. personally i'd opt for action somewhere in the middle (which at least is what is starting to be shown), but hey, condeming a week after Germany and France, well, you be the judge.

We are all still waiting for Alan & marine1 to complain about Obamasaih's quiet diplomacy re: Africa conflicts/elections.

In this case it's the leader of Iran that brags about destroying the USA, Israel etc...
You not really following world events?

Show me where he said he will destroy the US please alf, i am waiting for the link.

I recall his wipe Israel off the face of the earth comment but i do not recall him saying he wants to destroy the US. At least when the US wants to attack countries they can just say o look our intelligence says they have nukes and launch an attack and the rest of the world just accepts it.

Well good way to get your point across when in doubt say go google it yourself :), nothing worse than people making claims without anything to back it up alf.

I think the point is ( and correct me if I'm wrong)

Everybody portrayed him as the Saviour and he is good on many levels but in the end not that much different form what we are used to.
Very much of the same-ness going on around america for many years now.

No not yet mila, he has only been around for awhile now, you cannot expect him to fix the mess bush created in 8 odd years in a few months.

When they lie and say Iran has nukes and attack then yes i will say same old America.

Cool.

I just think the masses wanted a Saviour and got a diplomatic president.

Do not get me wrong so far i like him. But then i liked Bill too:o

Republicans... always wanting to stick it's *** in the middle East, Iraq is now a love child thanks to this and has a very bleak future.

The problem I have with the reports on Iran is that we only get info from the opposition from blogs and youtube, what if AMJ actually won the election and the opposition leader just suffers from sourgrapes and the voters are victims of follow the leader? People put too much faith in the opposition candidate.

But Iran has hope... more than half the MPs are standing up now, so Iranians can sort this out themselves.

Edit:
Also one of the youtube videos where Iran protesters are being fired at, they are actually chanting death the America, Death to Israel.. so yeah verification is lacking.

Um because African tyrants are nowhere near the international threat that Iran is. Of course if the Obamasiah did did get racket up the pressure on your old hero mad BoB you'd do your nut at this "meddling in his sovereign affairs". You prefer the Tbone doctrine :o

I've asked repeatedly for you to prove with the links this claim of yours that the U.S said Irag had "nukes". You've yet to supply a link

ROFL yes and Iraq had such a bright one under Saddam :D

Still waiting for answers to those questions I asked you about what you would do. So even if glowing Ahemi won that makes it fine to just shoot dead protesters. Imagine if Dubya did that. Sufferwell would be bouncing off the walls with rage :erm:

Some Muslims....always trying to dictate to the world how we should run our lives, the rest of the world will not bow to terrorism or people threatening to wipe out other nations.

Sufferwell doesn't have a problem with Iran meddling in Iraqi, Lebanese and many other states affairs.
