Found my DSLR today. A Nikon D40, brand spanking new in the box as if it was just bought from a shop, with all manuals, boxes, plastic and training voucher.

Getting it for R3500 - R1500 cheaper than Makro, R1400 cheaper than Orms. So I'm really chuffed.

Sure, it may not be the best in its class or the latest, but for a starter like me I think it's perfect.

Put in a R1000 deposit today, rest next week.

Big thanks to all who have helped! :)

Nice :D

I thought you already had, but anyway, great camera :)

Hehe, so glad I waited it out. Knew something good would come my way. The camera's shutter count is 0! :D

Well done and congratulations, the glass salesmen are waiting for you. :)
Do give us something to look at when you've sussed it out.

Indeed, hopefully the kit lens will last me a while.

Will be creating a Flickr.

One thing that's nice about Canon is that there are second-hand lenses and parts more frequently available. Will be scouting for second-hand Nikon stuff. ;)

ldmelsa, any hand-me-downs? :D Jokes.

Be careful when buying lenses (especially 2nd hand)... not all Nikon AF lenses are compatible with the D40/D60.

Thanks for the reminder. Will be sure to get AF-S and AF-I lenses with built-in focus motors.

Nice one! Now, to make good for all the free advice you've received here, you're obliged to get a flickr account :)

You can use even the old Nikon MF lenses. I've tinkered a bit with a D200 and an old 50mm (?) MF lens. It works and the camera could read the aperture.

lol dude
I got a 4GB card
holds 1000 photos (and that's the 12mp D90)

Got 8GB because it was only R230 and I can also use it to take other data around (although I probably shouldn't :p).
