Sentech

WHO'S WHO ON THE CLIENT LIST

By Duncan McLeod

Sentech counts musicians Johnny Clegg and Mauritz Lotz, former Springbok Ollie le Roux, deejay Tony Blewitt, Classic FM chairman Hylton Appelbaum and SABC chairman Eddie Funde among the clients of its Internet access service, MyWireless.

How does the FM know this? It shouldn't. But last weekend, a Sentech employee mistakenly e-mailed the company's customer database, including private e-mail and residential address details, to this journalist, who also happens to be a MyWireless customer. The employee e-mailed the document to 80 Sentech subscribers, according to public & media relations portfolio manager Maureen Mphatsoe.

The document, a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, also contains the personal contact information and home addresses of members of Sentech's management team, including CEO Sebiletso Mokone-Matabane.

The e-mail raises serious questions about the management of Sentech's internal processes and concerns about how the company treats confidential client information.

It appears that a Sentech call centre operator was given the customer spreadsheet and told to use the details therein to e-mail MyWireless customers with a Microsoft Word document detailing the company's policy on acceptable use of its network.

The Sentech employee in question, when sending the e-mail, attached the client database in addition to the Word file. He repeated the mistake 80 times.

The FM contacted Sentech on Monday morning to alert it to the error and to get comment. Within an hour, we had received a panicky phone call from a call centre operator apologising for the "inconvenience" and asking us to delete the e-mail.

Attorney and IT law specialist Lance Michalson says this is a classic example of a company not having proper information security measures to protect customers' personal information. "Sentech appears not to have applied the most basic principles [of information security]," he says.

However, because there have been no legal cases in SA related to information privacy, and because there is no legislation that specifically deals with the protection of the right to privacy, it's unlikely Sentech's clients could mount successful legal action against the company for breach of privacy.

"It is precisely for this reason that the SA Law Commission began working on drafting a comprehensive national data privacy act," Michalson says.

Mphatsoe says the breach is a big concern to Sentech, particularly given that it could end up in the hands of someone prepared to sell it to a competitor or to a spammer (someone who sends unsolicited commercial e-mail).

"It was an honest human error, but we understand the impact. It is very serious," Mphatsoe says. "Make no mistake, we will do everything in our power to ensure that it does not happen again."

80? This is worse than I initially thought.

The situation must be getting extremely desperate for Sentech after all this press coverage. Sentech MUST engage some sincere damage control IMMEDIATELY if it wants to survive this latest saga. An announcement on TheRoDent's open day should be forthcomming as soon as possible - any news on this?

As a show of goodwill, ProAsm must be allowed to return to this forum. His voice can only do Sentech some good - what further damage could he commit?

or this

So it might happen again, but we really tried to not let it happen again?

Last I heard Proasm no longer works in the MyWireless space at Sentech. He went back to the division he was with before MyWi.

well you can add an additional celeb to that list above got a email from a a real pissed off individual in response to my "spaming the nation" ...

Dear Duncan,

Since you seem to exacerbating Sentech's F$ck up by breaching the confidentiality of the so-called celebrities in your article, could I ask nicely for you to now delete the list? It is in your possesion illegally, and your current use of information from within the list is illegal. It would have been sufficient to report on this issue without naming any names.

Best Regards,

i belive he has turned it into a homes of the rich and famous ... now any celeb watcher will want a copy and im sure there will be a copy floating around at the high schools shortly ...

wait for the readers digest version [only celebs] to start appearing in a mail box near you ...

It would be one thing if this was an isolated incident. But this just slots in nicely with our past ST experiances:

-Non-existant network management.
-Outright denial and lies by management and call centre staff.
-Compiling "baddie" lists.
-Threatening to sue customers who expose their deficiencies.
-Massive security failures e.g. open proxies.
-And so on ...

I wouldn't be suprised to hear black hats are allready probing their internal network in the hopes of striking pay dirt.

From the article "The Sentech employee in question, when sending the e-mail, attached the client database in addition to the Word file. He repeated the mistake 80 times"...

So in this modern world, where there are thousands of types of mailing list and bulk email software, Sentech sends out mass emails like this:

Provide spreadsheet of email addresses and Word document to lowly employee
Lowly employee creates a new email in Outlook for every recipient, copies in the email address from the spreadsheet and attaches the Word document
Clicks Send after attaching file

At least they didn't manage to infect the Word document with a virus

I don't see why it should be such a great secret if you use Sentech - but maybe it should rather be called a shame-list, for those of us stupid enough to sign such a contract.
I'm more annoyed I didn't make that A-list. Duncan, after all, knows me and clearly doesn't rate me 8-(

Take the email addresses and send them the press articals such as the one above and at http://www.marketingweb.co.za/news/marketing/338374.htm

Many of these articals can be sent from the webpage, and send it from some other employees address

Marcel: Michelle, why did you send me this?

Michelle: Winston, why did you send me this

Winston: Marcel, why did you send me this?

etc.

It's safe to say that MyWireless is about to go down in history as the worst abortion of a service the ZA internet has ever seen.

3 Steps to an grandious cock up

1) False advertise to con clients into a 2 year contract

2) Threaten to sue them

3) Email the entire client list in plain text all over the internet.

Yup, those are defenitly the best ways to get the entire population against you, which is a shame because if Sentech had had half a brain between their collective management base, and a single person who knew TCP/IP from coffee beans they could have made more money than Telkom.
