Is this possible?

Also is there a key combination that sends files in Finder to the Trash?

I'm sure there is a downloadable tool to mimic "Cmd + X"? Although I've gotten so used to drag-and-drop when moving files/folders

CMD+X does not work for files for me, it works fine for text but never have I gotten it right with files.

If there are a lot of files you want to move from drive to drive just use Automator. Unless you understand cli.

That doesn't work (at least for me it doesn't)

To cut/paste:

CMD + C --> Copy
CMD + ALT + V --> Cut & Paste

This is definitely the route to go - there are good reasons why Mac employs this method, and this is much safer and more robust than any Automator scripts or utility apps

This is why I don't use Finder. Does Apple have a reason for not supporting Cut and Paste for files?

Cmd + X works for me in Finder - but pretty sure its due to me having XtraFinder installed - it's a free(?) app downloaded off the web - and offers plenty of extra features (tabs for Finder included)...

I also found Finder incredibly frustrating in the beginning - couldn't get my head around why such basic features would not work automatically, as they do in Win Exp. I'm used to its idiosyncrasies now - and muscle-memory has me working as quickly in it now, as what I ever did in Explorer.

I have always used CMD + X since OS X Tiger so not sure why it doesn't work anyone else. Must be something to do with Settings or something. I also use total finder for tabs and they add in the cut and paste contextual menus but I hardly use that. Always use my keyboard for exploring files as its super quick when you know the shortcuts.

Also have an idea it could be a settings issue. Of course - one could always create (assuming for whatever reason that it's not an settings issue) a system-wide keyboard shortcut... I've only started playing around with those recently (together with app-specific shortcuts), and it is quite frankly eye-opening at how much time can be saved - especially when used in conjunction with something like ActionsApp on the iPad [getactionsapp.com]...

Reviving an old thread - apologies!

Having installed Mavericks, and uninstalled XtraFinder - Cmd+X no longer works. Neither does creating a keyboard shortcut.

The weird thing is, Cut appears as an entry in my Finder menu - but it remains greyed out/inactive. Not sure if this is some sort of remnant of XtraFinder, or whether it's new in Mavericks - since I cannot recall ever checking for it before.

Will do a bit of searching and see if anything comes up again.

Cut becomes active when you're working with text in the finder.

Cmd C, then Cmd Alt V will do it

Thanks - I saw that earlier. Was just curious about the greyed-out option in the menu-bar (clarified by Bwana above). Which also confirms that it must have been XtraFinder that was allowing me to do it before (obviously!)

Click, drag and Command+release will move (not copy) the file(s).

I can highly recommend Xtrafinder. It's a plugin that makes Finder a lot more useful (at least to a Windows convert like me).
Specifically, it adds Cut & Paste (plus hotkeys), and Move to/Copy To (with recent folders) as options. It also added tabbed browsing before Mavericks, and static 2-pane view (a la the Norton Commander/File Manager view). All this and a bunch more besides.

And it's free!

Thanks snorbaard... Yip. Re-installed Xtrafinder at the beginning of the week. Had it for over a year - and then I found it getting a bit buggy round about the time Mavericks was released, and removed it... Haven't had any issues yet - so it looks like a keeper again. Nice to have Cmd+X back! :)
