Yup, a valid concern. Badly spent taxes is a terrible burden on our society.

I have already been told by a police officer (a woman) that the police protect "poor black people" and us "rich white people" need to get armed response. This was after I called them about a suspicious person on my pavement. When I demanded to speak to their superior I got transferred around the charge office until they just cut me off. I phoned back and spoke to the station commander the next day. But nothing happened of course.

Wooah, never had that happen before. I normally have swift and positive actions from the police... and Ive also seen the police ignore a rural domestic figure. I dont think your one callcenter police officer really reflects the reality on the ground.

If you are insured through a reputable insurer these have been included and covered for years.
 
This starts a interesting topic - you are paying for services rendered. So if they don't manage to save your house and it burns down and they charge you - can you sue them?
 
And in other news, PTA residents are going to have to pay for their electricity up front.
 
Great opportunity for one of many service providers in emergency services to start a fire brigade.

I unfortunately cannot agree. My experience with them has been largely one of general incompetence and carelessness. The only real racist experience I have had with them is that one, but it eats at me. I simply cannot believe that this officer would speak that out loud to me if it where not the general sentiment of at least the people present in the room. The fact that she did that means she felt comfortable that her colleagues thought the same way. How can I trust my life to people who seem to believe that they are not there to protect me.

When I was in an armed robbery in Jozi, the cops arrived quick and all SWAT like. Bailed over my wall like ninjas. When my work car (in EL) was stolen we recovered it in a couple of hours and bust the dude who stole it. The SAPS I have come into contact with were pretty good.
 
A friend of mine had his lapa torched. A couple of school kids lit it on fire.

The fire department arrived and doused the flames. He and his wife was at work and the fire department were already there when they arrived. Nothing was saved under the lapa (around R400k damages).
A while later they received an invoice for the call out from Tswane municipality.
AFAIK he just refused to pay it. They promised to investigate the arson (eyewitnesses saw the kids doing the deed) and nothing came of it. I'll have a chat with him again to hear if he finally settled the bill, but last time we discussed this he was willing to take them to court over this.

I wish my experience was as positive.

We had an armed robbery at my shop at 5pm, the cops arrived at ten to seven. Kept me and all my staff there until 10 so that the fingerprint people could come and say that they did not have the correct powder to take prints. They where supposed to be there first thing the next morning, they never came back.

My brother in law stole my car 7 YEARS ago, I got it back last week when he gave it back, this was after the police had him in custody no less than three times and then let him go with my car, never mind having the car impounded for 3 or 4 months without contacting us before eventually giving it back to him AGAIN. If they had just given the car back to us instead of to him 4 months after he stole it I would not have lost R85k on a car that he pulled thru his ass for 7 years.

Maybe I'm a little bitter... :p
 
Most people only report crime to the police in order to get a case number for legal or insurance purposes. Nobody reports a crime to the police these days actually expecting them to investigate or solve the case. They have become nothing but useless paper pushers, and even this they can't do properly considering most of them can barely read or write.
