I have heard from a good source (cannot be named but is in SAPS) that there is going to be a second round of firearm licensing for a new catagory.

Your current one will allow you to have a firearm for self protection at HOME.

The new license will allow you to have it off your permanent place of residence and allow you to carry it on your person.

They cannot manage the current licensing how they going to double up?? More fees I guess??

Money making scheme.

More effort disarming the populace - a clear sign of the imminent dictatorship

I hope that's a late April fools joke - they can't keep up with the current system. This will double the problems!

+1 Billion!

Firstly you apply for a license, wait 2 years maybe longer to get it. Once you have it you can’t use it.
If you can’t carry the firearm with you, whether it’s at home or outside your home premises, what’s the use for a license.
The license give you the right to carry it. Nowhere in the firearm act they state you are not allowed to carry a firearm when you have a license.
You are allow to Carry a firearm, but it need to be concealed to the public.

"Now you need to get another permit to carry it around." THIS IS JUST BULLLLLL.
This mean they need to change the firearm act.

Does this mean I can have one firearm at home, and one to carry with me?

Let me guess how this money making scheme will work:

1. They'll force you to jump through hoops to apply for license.
2. They charge you in the area of R500 for the pleasure of doing so.
3. They issue you a letter of why your application is refused.

surely it should be our constitutional right to bear arms?? kinda like in the USA??
would be great if that could be in the constitution ... as the cops do not work, and we need to be able to protect ourselves
wonder if we could take it to the constitutional court as I am sure we have the right to protect ourselves, and if the criminals all have guns, surely we should be equally equipped to protect ourselves?

Still waiting for my license card. I applied about 3 years ago. Last year August it was approved. They still haven't been able to provide it to me. It has now been re-printed three times and it just keeps going astray.

That does sound stupid, doing it the otherway round would make more sense as you would have the firearm in your house anyway. You should apply to have to carry the gun out of your house not keep it in your house.

Read the thread about the public minister admitting how the system's a mess. Makes one wonder why we still pay their salaries if they cannot do their jobs.

Got mine in just over a year. I still don't have my competency card though - they keep losing it, but have my license. I believe they only print out your competency on a normal A4 now.

The whole system is just flawed!

Yeah but just think about this.
If you can only keep it at home, how will you get it home from the gunshop? How will you take it to the range(every responsible firearm owner should go to the range regularly)?
This sounds like a really daft brainfart of an idea.

Yeah it's got holes all over the place. Though I think if you have it in a case in your boot it's hardly kept on you.
