Johannesburg - A young dog had to be put down after a firecracker exploded in his mouth, seriously injuring him.

The dog’s emotional owner was in tears as she told how children had thrown a firecracker over the wall and into their garden during the holidays, reported Beeld.

Tyson, an 18-month-old American pitbull cross, grabbed the firecracker like he always did with a ball before it went off, said Debbie Els.

“Tyson then went to lie under the tree. His tongue was torn, his intestines damaged. He was actually already dead. My husband poured water in his mouth and he lifted his head a little.”

The SPCA was called to the scene and he was put down.

“Tyson was my baby, my child. He was not a dog. Every time I talk about him I cry. I miss him so much,” a tearful Els said, adding that the family had been traumatised by his death.

Some of the children and their parents came to the Els home to ask how they could make up for what had happened.

“But how can you reimburse for a child’s death…you can’t.”

An SPCA official said the dog had been in a lot of pain with heavy bleeding and had to be put down.

An investigation was launched but no one was charged with animal cruelty.

That sucks big time.

I can only hope that the children learn from their stupidity...

Shame man, at least the perpretrators came forward. I hope this has scared them out of using firecrackers.

An investigation was launched but no one was charged with animal cruelty. - WHY THE **** NOT.

Do you think the kids intent was to kill/injure the dog?

Who cares? Actions carry consequences, whether intended or unintended, and those consequences need to be faced.
Make the kids help out at an SPCA or something.

Meanwhile... loss of a child? Over-dramatisation much.

Pets are like children. As a white man I'd expect you to understand! White card revoked.

They're easily replaceable. You'll mourn him for a week or two and have another one.

Detest fireworks, we had some "youngsters" using Big bangs over Xmas along the coast, don't see the point of these fireworks apart from making noise.

A sleeping 2yr old and 3 dogs went crazy.

On people doing stupid things, one holiday maker thought it OK to place his 2yr daughter on the front of his quad bike, him in the middle and 5yr son on the back, needless to say the thing rolled going downhill.
Guy broke his pelvis and both kids had broken bones, helicopter came in from East London to collect them.
Last year medi helicopter was at the same camp.

Poor dog, very sad indeed. I also hope this kids learned a lesson.

But how can you reimburse for a child’s death…you can’t.

1.) Fireworks arn't allowed to be fired in certain area's.
2.) The parents shouldn't have allowed the kids to play with them.

If I crash into someones car, should I not be responsible? Its not like I intended to do it.

If a toddler picked up the firework on the otherside of the wall and it blew off his hand, would it still be acceptable for no action to be taken?

I do, I'm not sure if this falls within the conditions of a animal cruelty charge. Need to find the act to confirm.

AFAIK the laws they broke are as folows:
Unless special Council authorisation has been applied for and granted, there are only 11 days annually when residents are allowed to "light or ignite" fireworks. Guy Fawkes and Divali are such days. (R 500 fine on other days).

Except for New Year's Eve, the only permissible time period for igniting fireworks on these days is between 19h00 and 22h00 (7 to 10 pm). (R 500 fine at any other time).

No person may allow any minor (child) under his or her control to "use, light or ignite" fireworks (R 1 500 fine).
No exceptions to this rule. No person may light or ignite fireworks in any place where animals are present (R 1 000 fine). This includes domestic homes.
from the article Im asuming the parents didnt even get a fine?

Im not a pet owner but im prety sure a 4K fine is nothing for the hurt they cuased thses peopl or the animal.

I'm sure this can be expanded due to the damage caused.
