Firecracker offered to boy as cigarette explodes in his face

There's a huge difference between these things:

And the kind of firecrackers available these days. The latter are like miniature bombs.
I'm sure you're right but you still can't deny the possibility of drunken stupidity rather than the intention to blow a kids face off.

Offering a cigarette to a 12 year old. I'm pretty sure that alone will get you before a judge.

Not unless it blows up in his face and puts him hospital in this country.

You mean commercially available versions? Probably. I'm guessing they emptied out a cigarette, stuck a cracker in it and did there best to make it look like a cigarette again.

My point is that it could be a case of stupidity as easily as it could a genuine desire to seriously harm someone.

Thought the same, but the wording of the article implies it might just have been a firecracker, no actual cigarette involved at all?
a firecracker exploded in his face after it was offered to him by three young men as a "cigarette"

Could as easily mean a firecracker, roughly the size of a cigarette, but not one lodged inside an actual cigarette. Would explain the damage done, a firecracker that size would pack a punch.

We used to do the same to my uncles.

But back in the day we only had those green and red tom thumb crackers. You had to roll out the Tabaco, put in the cracker and then put the Tabaco back and compress it with the back of a pencil. Hours of work for one small bang...

But with the crackers of today, no farking way in hell. You will blow someone's head off.

My mates and I did it to a dude in high school at a house party - also with a tom thumb. To this day he calls me Joker.

How wasted must the kid have been not to have noticed though? But, now that you mention it, the fact that the other homeless people turned down a free "cigarette" makes it seem likely.

We used to cut off the heads of matches and stuff them in cigarettes. Bit of a pop, fizz and then we'd get bliksemed.

Yeah the victim must have been a special kind of drunk/high/stupid, same as the "pranksters".

No decision yet on firecracker brothers' police docket

Port Elizabeth – Two Port Elizabeth brothers, who allegedly instructed a 12-year-old boy to light a fire cracker which later exploded in his face, were back in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Monday, flanked by a number of family members.

Sebastian and Demane Pillay are facing charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. A regional court prosecutor is yet to make an informed decision on the police docket.

The Pillay brothers are the sons of a Port Elizabeth police colonel. During January this year, the brother's allegedly instructed 12-year-old Sheldon Witbooi to light a cracker which exploded in his mouth.

Strange how quiet this case is, very little media attention and politicians getting involved but we all know why though.

PE firecracker brothers off the hook for now
