JOHANNESBURG – An arrested Orange Farm firefighter has been released after the prosecutor said that there is insufficient evidence to charge him with the murder of his platoon commander in Vanderbijlpark.
The firefighter was arrested last week after he allegedly shot and killed his superior who had tried to hand over a disciplinary letter at the firefighter's home.
Commander Lesedi Mphatswe who died on the scene, has been described as a skilled professional who dedicated 20 years to the service.
The Orange Farm firefighter’s lawyer Jaco van Heerden confirmed to Eyewitness News that the prosecutor felt there was insufficient evidence to charge him with the murder.
JOHANNESBURG - Questions have been raised after charges were dropped against an Orange Farm firefighter who was accused of killing his platoon commander in Vanderbijlpark.
The case has now been referred back to the investigating officer to collect more evidence, despite at least one witness to the shooting and a firearm being found at the scene.
The firefighter had been charged with shooting his superior who had attempted to hand over a disciplinary letter at the emergency worker’s house.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has told Eyewitness News that it will respond to questions raised about the withdrawal of the case against the firefighter after it has consulted prosecutors.
JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) will today hold a memorial service at the Florida Park Fire Station for an Orange Farm commander who was shot and killed, allegedly by another firefighter.
Lesedi Mphatswe was killed when he arrived at a firefighter's house in Vanderbijlpark, to hand him a suspension letter.
The firefighter has since been released after the prosecutor in the case ruled that there’s insufficient evidence against him.
Mphatswe has been described as a skilled professional, a diligent firefighter and will be remembered for dedicating more than 20 years to the service.
Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Nana Radebe says the memorial service will also be held for two other firefighters who died in car crashes.
A City of Johannesburg firefighter who killed his station commander during an altercation over a disciplinary process has been sentenced to a prison term of 12 years.
Both were attached to the Orange Farm Fire Station.
Station Commander Lesedi Mphatswe‚ a 21-year veteran who had also served in Randburg and Jabulani‚ amongst other areas‚ was shot dead while trying to serve a disciplinary letter to the firefighter at his home in Vanderbijlpark‚ south of Johannesburg.
The firefighter was sentenced by the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court on Tuesday this week‚ Public Safety MMC Michael Sun said in a statement on Thursday. He did not name the now-convicted man.
