23 hours left on the 24 hour download spree invited and set up by the guys behind Firefox’s latest version. The Firefox 3 Download Day has gotten off to a shaky start with its website doing the official counting going down due to user overload.
http://www.spreadfirefox.com/worldrecordis the place to go in order to get the download counted with various unofficial FTP and HTTP download locations popping up all over the web where those who ran into this virtual brick wall can go to satisfy their thirst for browser novelty. Very few Firefox fanatics will have the stomach to wait and there will probably be a new record for the most double downloads in a 24 hour period sprouting from this Download Day drive.
I am sure the techies at Mozilla are working feverishly to get the counting site back and reachable. The unintended DoS effect will have to be solved quickly as the hours are ticking down fast.
If you cannot get in, I suggest you check back periodically until bed time…
UPDATE: From Cnet.com “Mozilla hopes to set a 24-hour record for most downloads with Firefox 3, but the delay shouldn’t affect that much. “The 24-hour period starts when the site goes live,” spokeswoman Melissa Shapiro said.”
