Firefox gets security upgrade

If you want to cut down on ads and banners, there are a few things you can do. First, this:

Basically, you add some code to the userContent.css file in your Firefox profile's Chrome folder. On Windows XP, this folder is C:\Documents and Settings\<your account>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<your profile>\chrome.

This file does NOT exist by default, so go right ahead and create a new text document. Paste the text in the next post into the file. Rename the file to userContent.css and make sure Windows actually bugs you about changing the extention to css (instead of txt).

Restart Firefox. This will basically

- block all pictures of a certain dimension (banner dimensions)
- block URLs and pictures from loading that contain any combination of words such as "/ad", "/ads", "/click", "?click", "Click Here To Visit Our Sponsor", "Sponsored Links", and LOTS more.
- blocks tables with certain dimensions (used by certain ad agencies)
- blocks embedded (Flash, Shockwave) ads containing the above mentioned words and identifiers in their URL
- more popup blocking
- and lots more



The second thing I did was install AdBlock.

This extention will let you block ads that do manage to come through the CSS modification. You will need to block each ad you find manually, but using wildcards this will eventually filter out all ads.

For example, when I go to www.anandtech.com, one of the banners is supplied by Mediaplex, and the url is something like http://altfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/fm/41blah. I just added http://*.mediaplex.com to the filter, because I don't give a **** about that website. Hence, no more ad.

Have fun. Now go to cnn.com and compare the difference between the rendering in Firefox and in IE. Or go to msn.com. Or other websites. Neat, eh?

Um, a point to make here. AdBlock allows you to hide the ads instead of removing them, which allows the site admin to get his money from the ads, so you get to support the site while not being bothered by the ads. Setting Adblock to remove the ads does not retrieve the ad at all, so you end up not supporting the site.

In MyADSL's case, I would prefer to support. Dunno about you...
