There is one thing that really gets my goat with Firefox and that is when you download a file that has no extension with 'Save Link As...' FF automatically adds an extension of '.htm'
How can I stop it doing this, as once done, you have to go back into the folder and spend a long time renaming all the files.
Both IE and Chrome don't do this.

That's weird. I don't recall this ever happening with me. But then I don't usually download files with no extension. Where are you getting these files from? Can you give us a link so that we can try?

Most code file svn's are password protected but here is an example:
http://ffmpeg.org/download.html
At the very bottom of that page is a file called changelog which has no extension.
If you just click on it you will see its just a text file but to download it you need to rightclick and 'Save Link As...' then you'll see FF adds the extension '.htm' and even if you rub out the .htm, it still saves it with a .htm extension.
Now when you have many of these kind of files, normally Makefile's you end up with a serious renaming problem.

Don't have such a problem with my FF downloads through the FF download add on.

Is this on all download sites?

Yes on all sites that have files with no extension.
Even the add on, if you select it, it just opens it.
To download you have to use the 'Save Link As...'
As I say with Chrome or any version of IE it works perfectly and one should not need 3rd party apps to make FF work properly.

It downloads it as "Changelog.txt" on my system.

Be interesting to see why it adds a .txt to yours and a .htm to mine.
Even in my download box, if I remove the .htm, it still adds it.
The actual file changelog has no extension at all and that is how it should download.
Try it with IE and you'll see what its supposed to do :)

maybe it is some extension that is handling the file extension? What happens if you install DownThemAll and try to download it with that?

Also go into your tools / options / applications and see what is going on there.

When right clicking "save as", instead of leaving the default "Save as type:Firefox document" change that to "All files".

Then add the .txt extension to the file name and it should save it they way you want it t.

That's the problem, I can add .txt or any extension I like but i dont want an extension.
It must download it exactly as it is on the server, ie: no extension.
Makefiles for compiling do not have extensions and that's the problem.
Anway no matter, because of this serious flaw in FF I'm switching over to chrome.
