Fireplace advice

Aircon works better

We are running Aircons at home. Does both heat and cooling. Heats up a room in 10 minutes and can keep it warm depend on your insulation.

Installed some 130mm Isotherm insulation in the ceiling and insulated all piping. Also insulated the doors.

So 30 minutes and the room is baking crispy then the aircon gets turned off.

The nice part in summer it cools. Also installed some water tanks at the outlets and it can fill a bucket equivalent overnight with clean water.

Also with fireplaces it tends to leak if not done properly and need a lot of maintenance long term to prevent the leaking and the rust.

About insulating your doors, how did you do that if I may ask. I've been meaning to do mine for quite a while now as I alos have aircons in my rooms.

Strips

At the hardware store ask for the rubber strips to make your doors quiet. Thats the easiest way to ask. Basically its white or black rubber like spongue strips which you stick around the doorway and you can paint over them. They are stickable on only one side.

Totally understand but the aircon doesn't really add to the ambience :)

Don't buy the megamaster units. Cheap chinese imports with no parts locally. If anything breaks you're screwed.

Rather go for a decent European brand like Dru / Godin / Kratki etc. You get what you pay for.
Thanks looking at the euro fireplace at the moment

Not that I know much about fireplace's, but I totally agree with you based on the research I did on braai's.

We have a Nestor Martin H23 which can burn wood or anthracite. Costs about R25k. Heats up a large bedroom. Very happy with it so far.

From what i've heard those are **** and the warranty is **** as well +-1-2 years iirc.

The proper cast iron European stuff is 5 years+ and those companies (Dru / Godin / Kratki etc) have been in business for 300+- years.

Personally I don't think I'd end up buying a steel fireplace, as the longevity isn't nearly as good as cast iron.

Noted, will look into that then. If I want it to last years either pay up now or again later... and I would rather do it properly now!

I am pretty sure that by the time my fireplace has lived its life I won't be in my current house anymore.
I don't need the fireplace to last 100 years.

Hehe well I'm in no rush, winter is almost at an end. So I guess we both in the same boat determining what to pull the trigger on.

Yip.
A R25-R40k fireplace looks nice and I'm sure it will last forever.
But a R7k fireplace will do the job, and will likely last at least a decade. That's all I need.

Fair enough.

I note megamaster are having a special on one of their Bosca units for R9999 vs R12500-R15000 normally (dependong on where you shop). It's not cast iron, but it's also not a Chinese brand. Bosca is from NZ and has been around for almost 48 years.

Anyone have any experience with the brand and the unit below?

Thanks!

It's actually from Chile iirc.
I have the bosca limit 380 for a year now. Self installed and still working great.

My local mica in Centurion has a new version on markdown for about 6000ish.
