Fireplace advice

I got a Bosca closed combustion recently and it was brilliant this winter. Make sure you think carefully where to place it for best effect. The installer we used was fantastic - he gave lots of great advice and fees were reasonable

It's actually from Chile iirc.
I have the bosca limit 380 for a year now. Self installed and still working great.

My local mica in Centurion has a new version on markdown for about 6000ish.

Looks like you're right. I swear I had seen a Youtube vid that said NZ though.

1.) How are you finding the Bosca Limit 380? Any issues?
2.) Also what m2 area are you covering?
3.) That's an amazing price from your Mica!

If I wasn't set on the Godin (http://eurafrican.co.za/product/fontemont-12kw-freestanding/) I'd probably consider it - but I'm not really sold on the longevity of steel and Bosca. From what I've read you'll be lucky to see 7-8 years, whereas the Godin would be for life.

AFAIK bosca was a guy from one of the other South American manufacturers that started his own thing.

1. No issues works well once you figure out the controls.

2. It's in the dining room which is open plan, lounge to one side kitchen to other. I do think its a bit small for my place. We rearranged the lounge and the seating is right in front of 2 sliding doors, and with the ceiling having no insulation you don't really get the heat from the fireplace on this side. Was much better against a wall with no openings.

3. Yes I got mine for a similar price on marked down during summer lol so was not too concerned about longevity. That said if you do regularly maintenance, ie cleaning the flue and making sure the baffle is in good order, it should last quite a while.

Also using good seasoned wood is must.

Point 2 is what i'm worried about! I don't want to buy it and then figure out it's too small. I'd rather spend the extra money now, than have regrets later.

Point 3 - I'm wondering how one can locate these specials easily. I think you probably need to go in to all the shops manually to check... I mean that's probably close to a 40-50% discount on that unit, but nowhere online can I find anything near that.

Yip. I'm with you on point 3. Tvs are a dime a dozen fireplaces arnt advertised everywhere :p

Correct on the pricing, usually find them off season when retailers want to offload stock to clear floor space.

From what I've read before purchasing its much better to have a smaller unit running at 100% power than bigger one running at 50%.

This was our second winter, first winter was great in the lounge, but not so much after we moved seating to opposite side, still don't regret it though. I'll hopefully be doing insulation before next winter - and that will hopefully sort the issue out.

Keep us posted.

I plan to do insulation (have none) and replace rotting wood windows with aluminium. We bought an old house and it needs a fair bit of work as the previous owners neglected it.

It's damn cold at the moment so I'm wanting to pull that itchy trigger finger of mine and buy a combustion fireplace. The girlfriend wants me to wait for summer (as winter is almost over) and grab one at a big discount.

I'm not sure if I can wait though :D

Listen to the GF! She can keep you warm in the interim...
Have a look on the Internet. Someone must have come up with calculator to get the capacity right based on area or volume to be heated.
The placement problem must also have been addressed by someone.

I got this Bosca: https://megamaster.co.za/products/bosca-firepoint

And I see the price on their site is now even lower than what I paid for it on November.

Installation was R3800 if I recall. Your roof type will make a difference though as the guy gave a detailed quote not just a standard price. Of all the contractors we used during our renovations he was the only one that really impressed me.

Great, thanks. Was the R3800 just installation or also the flue pipe etc?

*** - heritage home with Victorian fireplace(not sufficient heat and bugger to clean) - would like to install a closed combustion unit with flue through existing chimney, doable?

I've a cast iron stove (closed combustion) and love it. Can use wood, anthracite or eco-logs. Important to have a quality stainless steel chimney installed (flue & cowl). I learn't that the hard way and had to replace mine this year.

I use eco-logs that are made down the road from me so buy on demand as they are always dry. My up country family use anthracite instead.

So many options on the market today so find what you like.
Please explain more about stainless steel flue/cowl?

I have a closed wood burning fireplace in our entrance area which should heat kitchen ,.entrance and lounge and that damn thing only seems to heat the entrance area.

I know heat is distributed via the flue/chimney and was thinking to install a small fan to move the heat around.

In fact, was planning to move it to our lounge since it seems to inefficient .. or to dump it and replace with gas. Hauling wood is such a pain in the arse.

One of my friends has this as well. Essentially your whole flue acts as a heater that emits the heat outwards in a 360 deg radius. I'll be putting one of these in as well when our fireplace goes in. His fireplace isn't to big but heats the entire house

How many m2 are you heating? And does it heat the whole house?

You can buy the heat fans to move the air around (that sit on top of these units) for +-R800. They're heat powered, so no battery or electricity.
