Fireplace advice

I saw the price and no availability for my Morso 1510, so I just made a new one from 10mm steel plate. Two winters on and it's working fine.

I did similar with the smoke box in ours, to replace the well worn/used original would have been an additional R10k, SA Premier Fires offer alternative mild steel options for much, much less. considering we already had the alternative mild steel baffle plate I went with their mild steel smoke box.

Anyone in PE that can vouch for TheFireworks company?
Can confirm it does exist. I have been in that shop before.

Hi All

Get the feeling this winter is going to be cold… so looking to install a free standing closed fireplace. Just looking for some advice on brands to avoid and reputable installers. Looking for something between 80cm and 90cm width

We have a Morso 1630 which we love but it came with the house and I am not entirely sure I would choose it, largely due to the purchase price and OEM part cost should something need repair/replacement.

A good friend runs Beauty Fires in Gauteng, they are in Fourways in the same centre as Cycle Lab, they have a large range of indoor fireplaces, both imported and local.

Good luck finding anthracite. Don't know about up Gauteng way, but there ain't none of the stuff to be had down here in the Cape.

I got a Hydrofire which I'm very happy with this (it's a rebranded Bulgarian manufactured fireplace).
I used Turbovent as the installer - was also happy with them.

Agrimark normally do have. Have you tried there?

Also, I'm talking bakkie loads - not those tiny little shopping bags for ridiculous prices.

Going to beautyfires in the weekend to have a look with the wife. Team was very responsive and video called to have a look at the area as well.

Every retailer has advised to stay away from mega master for some reason

Hydrofire ghosted me, sent an inquiry and got a few responses and then nothing after two follow up messages

Trying to stay away from Morso, had one in our previous house and the maintenance cost racks up.

Will give turbovent a call.

Thanks all! Will post feedback once we decide.

Random related question.

Why is it that wood is advertised in pieces, kg and 'bakkie' loads.

Seeing one advert where a bakkie load is 1000 pieces... Another one where a piece averages a kg... And another one where a bakkie load is only 320kg?? So how do people compare, or do they just not bother?

Might do a quick comparison on the old homeblog - - comparing gas, elec, wood and coal.

Wood delivery scheduled for tomorrow, as is redoing the water proofing of our fireplace flue on the roof, waiting to hear when the roof insulation will be delivered. Ordered more wood than last year as I ordered twice last year and would rather have more than I need with a newborn in the house this winter. Ordered 132 sqm of 145mm thick insulation for our bedrooms, bathrooms and office as the roof has bugger all at the moment, so it should make a difference to maintaining room temperature. Like our last house I plan to do install it myself, should be a bit easier as there is more apace between our roof trusses and more space in the roof to move around, will get some wooden planks to assist. Morning outside temperatures are in the 7 Deg C at the moment so getting closer to sealing up the house and making daily fires…
