Fireplace advice

Anthracite does not smell as a good wood fire. While it is burning its is fine, but the chimney tends to smell quite bad, a bit like an industrial fire, the day after the fire

I went back to wood because of this. A bakkie load of about 1500 pieces lasts 3 years. My wood store is under the internal stairs and is dry. I cannot recall what I paid in 2020.

Hello everyone. Any recommendations for buying wood for fireplace in Cape Town? Tried Capetownfirewood but they seem to be out of BlueGum.

Good luck trying to get dry wood in the Cape.

Took delivery of 4 000 pieces last week for R5 400 packed and delivered. Not as wet as the couple of bags I bought on the side of the road but decent enough.

Wood is from Malmesbury side delivered to Somerset West. 20230614_134823.jpg

Yup, burning my last dry wood. Went outside and looked at my wood... So wet I just walked back inside.

Time to move some of it under roof, but that is a premium at home.

This will last me till after next winter. I normally buy in summer for a two year supply.

Don't count every piece but they came with two bakkie loads full. One bakkie load is 2 000 pieces.

It's going nicely now. I bought a couple of bags of starter pieces but it's basically pine from pellets cut up into smaller pieces. Works well to get the bigger pieces going. 20230621_153403.jpg

Slightly wet wood, 8 pieces of these pine starters and only half a piece of firelighter and i have a roaring for going. 20230622_163353.jpg20230622_163341.jpg

If you absolutely must get a fire going, those eco logs, super expensive, but usually available from our local pnp, and they always burn easy. Looks like https://www.builders.co.za/Outdoor-Garden-and-Patio/Braais/Wood-&-Firelighters/Good-Wood-Eco-Log-Firewood/p/000000000000702162

Like I say, if you are more concerned about getting something that works right now than price, because that aint cheap.

and its not super expensive cos one log has about 10 pieces so you get quite alot of starters

10 minutes later and all the pine is burnt out but there's sufficient heat and coals to make sure the fire can sustain itself.

Can hear the sizzling of the moisture in the would boiling away. 20230622_164427.jpg

Our fireplace (closed combustion wood burner) came with house. I don't know who the manufacturer is except for the fact that the previous owners left some spares with the word Morso (spare fireproof woolen tape, and something else I can't recall. Ii think it could be this brand https://www.morsoe.co.za/product-category/fireplaces/ but from their pics, they have their name on the top of every fireplace while mines nothing, so perhaps my fireplace is a different brand.

It's been 7 years since we moved in. We service the chimney annually (same guy the previous owners used)

I noticed that there is rust appearing at the mouth of the door, seems to have been going on for a while which I just never previously gave extra thought to. There is in internal thin strip of metal inside the door to keep the wood inside the chamber which is now seriously loose (probably also affected by rust. The fireplace is black in colour and where it's rusting, the paint has worn off. The fireplace just needs some TLC.

So some questions:-
1. I guess these are things that can be serviced and if so, any recommendations for someone in the sandton/randburg area? In my mind, the fireplace would need to be removed, serviced offsite, and then reinstalled. I will do this in September.

2. If you have done this, how much would it cost approximately?

3. I feel it needs a respray and if so, so if that is going to be part of the service, I am thinking it would be cool to make it another colour, possibly dark red - is this actually possible?

Thx as always for your advice!

For what it's worth, bought from Stompies as they delivered in bags as I can manage them better. Unsure if the wood is good quality as the bark seems to be loose and falls off on the blue gum wood. (Pink and white blue gum according to delivery guy). I have no reference myself having used to buy eco logs and had loads of red blue gum (the driver told me what wood I had - he said that's the best kind cos it's super hard)

I had bought bluegum and black wattle. The wood is nice and dry and burns nicely. Bought 20 cm pieces and they fit perfectly in the fireplace.
I can't believe we are 55% of the way using up the wood purchased already. And that was with me finally using up red bluegum wood that I had for 6 years that I finally managed to chop to fit into the fireplace.

A month or so later, very happy with the wood. It burns so nice (and without any stink) even if a bit messy (lots of wood fluff from the barks, etc. Will buy from them again.

Mind sharing your contact please?

I'm looking to do a bulk 5000-10000 piece order in CPT if the price / wood is good.

Give Beauty Fires in Fourways a call, a good friend of mine runs their Gauteng store/operations, they don't do Morso if that is indeed what you have but they do general servicing of almost any fireplace...

We are probably 75% - 80% through our wood that I bought before winter, the Morso we have now burns a lot more than our previous one and I have been at home for some of the colder periods so had the fire burning. I may need to make a plan if we run out and will then order even more for next winter from our main supplier.
