Fireplace advice

Thanks for the advice all

Fireplace has been installed and gave it a spin this evening. Please note we went with a "small" closed unit of 5-7Kw this is Gauteng after all not aiming to heat whole house just the TV room/library and have nice cozy heat and great ambiance.

As evenings are getting warmer the fire place use is decreasing. But wow what a difference it made this winter really glad we got it. Pretty much ran it every day since install

Regrets none!

I'm running out of firewood :X3:

I think i'll take a stab at a bulk order (and even if it's green, it's got time to dry).

Anyone have a bulk order contact in CPT (+-5000 pieces)
Bluegum, redgum, wattle, something fireplace friendly - no rooikraans or sekelbos as they burn too hot and can crack your fireplace...

I guess it depends how much you want to pay per piece.

Here are my notes (for myself really).

  • Firewood Cape Town
    Firewood Cape Town Facebook
Terrible service, most expensive pricing, FB reviews reveal terrible wood. I have avoided them after speaking to them on Whatsapp. Super expensive too.
  • The Wood Gurus
Great service, average pricing, good wood but not perfectly seasoned, need to buy years in advance
  • Nambibian Hard Wood
Decent enough service, average pricing, great wood, was able to immediately use the bluegum bagged wood in the fireplace. Best wood supplied for usability in my opinion.
  • GoodWood On Milton

Awesome people, I want to use them but I don't like the wood I received.

My preferred provider for massive bulk is The Wood Gurus. Not the cheapest price, but if you lucky you can order 5k pieces. You can go to this link for their 1000 pieces wattle. Add 5 to your cart and you good to go if you dropping 10k on wood.

For quality, I really prefer Namibian hardwood. Absolutely best provider if you want perfect blue gum and ordering at the start of winter. I literally didn't have to try to get these pieces to take light, and they were nice and clean.

Nice, thanks for the detailed feedback.

I definitely need to make a list of who I've used over the years - and why I stopped.

I know prices have shot up drastically, but at one stage (granted 3-4 years back) it was possible to bulk buy at R700/R800 for a 1000 pieces (assuming you did a big order like 5000). I probably need to adjust that closer to the R1000 mark now...

The best wood I've actually had so far is massive splits / chunks of Red River Gum - chuck 2-3 of those on overnight and the fireplace still had coals at 6am.

I used The Firewood Company in Cape Town twice now (for blue gum). First time was at the beginning of the Winter season and second was a couple weeks ago to top up. First delivery was all good, very good quality seasoned blue gum.

The second delivery looks like they've thrown a few random pieces of some other wood along with the blue gum, but I've only opened one bag so far so maybe it was just that one. Will have to see.

Hi Guys

It's that time of the year again. What is the opinion on redgum for the fireplace place. I usually buy black wattle but they don't last very long.

Had our first fire last night just for the hell of it. Fortunately I’ve got a stack of seasoned milkwood trimmings ready to work my way through before I need to resupply. This stuff burns very nicely.

Ive had two fires in the last month. Ahhh never ever gets old! Nothing beats a wood burning fire!

I have diddly-squat experience in these things. Depending on finances, we'd like to do it next year or thereafter.

Will chip in that whoever installs it, make sure they have experience in this and have public liability insurance.

May also want to let your broker or insurance company know that you are installing a fireplace. It changes the risk and exposure to fire increases, even if it is only a wee bit. There's no point in installing a fireplace at cost, (God forbid) your home happens to burn and the company rejects the claim because of non disclosure.

Unfortunately I have seen companies try to reject bigger claims over pithy issues. Some will if the claim happens to be big.
Also remember to have your fireplace serviced every year, as well as regulation fire extinguishers checked. These can also void insurance claims.

Order 100 pieces and pay 50%. Then if scam, loss is less.
Tell him, if he arrive with more pieces, you will order more on the spot.
