Fireplace advice

I bought one that I saw advertised on Facebook Marketplace.

I bought two so it was R350 per unit instead of R399.
Woodpecker Log Splitter from Omega Steelworks:

Very happy with it - already split a few logs and it was very easy.

PS that's their image not mine
This one looks a lot beefier than the other one. I have one of the other ones and its a bit flimsy.

Just had the fireplace serviced today, had my wood for a while. Ready for winter.
I had a run last weekend as we had lots of little ones visiting at night so needed to keep them comfortable. Thankfully it was good - now just to buy more wood again ... who's got the good deals this year?

Also another wierd question: I bought hard/soft cubes from firewood farm last year. They are good I guess

Last weekend, too, we went to a restauratn that had a fire going - we sat near it. We were there for 2.5 hours and not once did anyone come to put a piece of wood in, yet that thing burnt so lekker for all the time. Whether I use hard/soft wood in my fireplace, I am needing to put a new piece every 15-30 minutes (and the air vents are nearly closed) so what wood can I try this year??

It's like the wild west when it comes to finding a wood guy.

I used the same company this year as I did last (The Wood Gurus), 750 pieces (70% dry blue gum) - R1400 for the wood and R200 for delivery and stacking. A bit more expensive than last year but then again what isn't. Had it stacked and drying outside some more the past couple months.

i paid R1200 for blue gum for 1000pces including delivery and stacking

wood was little wet cause i bought it after our 1st rains

now the wood out there will probably be very wet cos has rained a few days so far

temu has the cleaning rod and brush

i did mine myself last year the set was like R300 compared to R800 the guys charged me

my dirt was very little so i didnt bother paying them and i bought the cleaning kit to DIY
My guys clean and replace the fire bricks/board on the inside as well as replacing the door seal.

I'll honestly pays these guys as it's not a fun job at all working in a dirty fireplace.

replace the firebricks as well ..why ?

wont that be costly

but yeah i guess also depends on the fireplace

Oh but you like getting your wood wet.

Have the same issue so would be interested in other suggestions

Hi everyone, I'm looking for recommendations for reliable fireplace installers.

We recently moved into a new home and we're really feeling the cold - our previous house had a closed combustion fireplace from Hydrofire, which worked nicely.

Unfortunately, our new place doesn't have any fireplace installed yet. I had Hydrofire come out for a consult, but I wasn’t too happy with the outcome.

I’d really appreciate any recommendations for fireplace installers in Cape Town so that I can get some more options

looking at this thread again and i must say its very important for your cowl to be working properly

on friday i decided to light my 1st fire not checking if the cowl is fine

it was "stuck" so obviously needed some grease

lit the fire and all was fine smoke went out

left the house and came back 45mins later ...wind came down the cowl and blew ash into the lounge

house was smelling for 4 days of wood and smoke

I used gcfires in Somerset West for a stove and then found an installer. They can probably install or recommend someone.

Freestanding vs insert. Which one would you choose?
Freestanding can be cheaper compared to insert, but is freestanding as efficient when enclosed in fireplace opening?

Eish. I believe the one with a fan needs power?
Check this out on takealot: Heat Powered Stove Fan 4 Blade Silent Eco Fan for wood, anthracite stoves

I suppose it might be problematic to use on an insert fireplace.
