I'm sure there must be a thread already about this but I couldn't find it. It sounds really hectic this year

I want to give some perspective for people not from Australia.
More Aussie land is currently burning than exists in the entire country of Belgium. The smoke is causing breathing problems in New Zealand, 2,000km away. Half a billion animals have been killed. Eight people are dead.

One-seventh of the state of Victoria is on fire. The fire front in the state of New South Wales is so long that, if you made it a straight line, it would stretch from Sydney to Afghanistan. The fires are being fought by volunteers.

The Australian government refuses to discuss the fact that the NSW fires have now been burning for three months, and will still be burning in three months. Climate change is a “political issue” that shouldn’t be discussed at this time, apparently.
There doesn't seem to be much talk about it in SA or anywhere, that I've seen. I know we have a few people here on myBB who are now living in Australia, it not as bad as the twitterverse is making out or what?

Sister in law lives north of Sydney in Castle Hill/Cherrybrook. Over the road is a eucaliptus forest. These trees go up like fireworks and just explode

She says the sun has been an orange blob in the sky for 3 months. Everything smells of smoke, the air is full of tiny particles (not ash) and the water pressure has been reduced to 1/3

Well glaciers in New Zealand have apparently turned brown from all the ash from their neighbours, so I'd wager it's pretty bad
You can also see from "real time" air pollution stats that they are having big issues (vs the rest of the year where pollution was much much better).

Fire map
Air Quality map (not sure of accuracy though)

Lovely area. A have some friends there. I used to stay a few suburbs south.

Few people realise just how flammable gum trees are. These buggers don't only shed leaves but also bark and entire branches. All of which are highly flammable.

Many of the fire fighters over there are volunteers, they have taken time off their regular jobs to fight fires almost on a 24 hour basis. Tough people them Aussies.

the fire has its own weather system, a fire "tornado" or some sort overturned a firetruck killing one fireman inside of it

Times like this I wish I could sign up as a volunteer to fight bush fires. I will admit that pyromania is never too far off in me. But there is a really deep urge in me to fight and extinguish fires ... especially fires like these.
