Just installed a PCI-E 1x Firewire 800 card to use with the Lexar reader. WOW!

My USB reader transferred at speeds of 7 MB/s from a 133x CF which I thought was rather slow. Now i'm getting over 30 MB/s!! 1.7GB of images in 43s.

Maybe i just had a really really bad reader (Apacer 14-in-one) and didn't know it.

SubliminalThought, is the Lexar reader a FW800 reader? I guess it doesn't matter, FW400 can do 30MB/s easily anyway.

Must have been, because USB2 can handle up to 480Mbps, that is 80MB/s

In theory. you're unlikely to ever get that in practise.

With my external USB HDDs USB2 tops out at around 42MB/s. 480Mbps (60MB/s) is very theoretical. But I also know that its very dependant on the devices thats plugged in as well. Even if a device claims to be USB2 the max throughput you can get can be so varied. I just didn't realise how crap my old reader was as I put the slowness down to having a slow memory card. Guess it was just the reader all along.

Yes its the Lexar Firewire 800 UDMA reader. I would have gotten the USB, but Lexar agents wanted around R650 (its $40 at BH) as it was special order, where the firewire one they sold to me at R320 (its $75 at BH) probably because they had in stock.

If you think you have a bad card reader that does 7 MB/s from a 133x card... my Apacer card reader only does 2.6MB/s from a 300x card
that is really frustrating as it takes around 20 minutes to download a 2gig card

Yeah true hey :/ i really think i should upgrade my card reader too as its ridiculous that i have to wait so long for the files to transfer.
Where did you get your card reader from?
maybe i should just invest in a better memory card reader
