firmware update via kies

I use a 3G Dongle for internet access on my laptop.
I'm trying to use KIES to upgrade to android 2.3 on my galaxy s, Kies notifies me that there is a new firmware available, I proceed with the update after backing up my phone but it never gets passed "Preparing firmware upgrade components" I left it running for two hours but still no progress. I've even tried uninstalling and re-installing kies.

Has anybody else had problems like this?

Yes, endless problems.I also used to use a usb dongle. When i updated to froyo via kies i spent over R400 on data bec the update would freeze at a certain percentage, i started over like 5 times.
I no longer use kies.

Yes.

It works on my work pc, not my home pc.

After about 10 attempts I managed to update my galaxy to 2.3.3.

Now trying a buddy's phone and kies just wont connect to the phone!

Kies = piece of junk software tbh.
