Firmware upgrade for Novatel [also fixes error 692]

Aisne

I would suggest that antenna as well. I stay in a real bad spot. Always handy when you are in a fix.

V3G I cannot tell you how well this system is running. This is the longest I have been on 3G since I got connected in Feb. Infact it has been on since Saturday non stop. Trying to figure out how to use up 700MB of unused bandwidth in 1 day :-)

VMS, very glad you're seeing good service. You had a rough time getting to this point.

Remember to tell all those influential friends!

It's a pity we don't know which of the parameters that changed caused this. Hardware, firmware, dashboard, you changed all at the same time.

Good from a service experience perspective, bad from a debugging one...

Won't you post your HW rev, please?

...... or the upgrades (firmware and dash 5) has done the trick.

How do I get hold of V5? Ever since upgrading the firmware, it seems if my connections are less reliable (but it also might have been the network as I now regularly battle to get a 3G connection first time round)

In the FAQ.

Basically FTP to omnisol.co.za as anonymous. I've 'borrowed' some space here to allow you guys to download various files while we wait for Vodacom's FTP server.

V3G

HW Rev 1B. Firmware now on version 14. Running new dash version 5. Always using Novatel antenna. Lucky rabbitsfoot dangling from the side. :-)

Yes I agree, bad practice. I did not have time to play around.

I wonder if forumites realise the irony in the release of Version 14 for the Novatel cards.... :

Whilst MTN were doing there integration testing for this card, they picked up a bug whereby when on GPRS CS4 and in the presence of another radio signal, the card would just hang. V14 was a release from Novatel to address MTN's specific integration testing issues. They (being MTN) placed their order for these cards on hold until the problem was fixed, thereby forcing the issue.

So - what am I actually getting at here? A big THANK YOU to MTN for sorting this problem out through proper integration testing and bug fix resolution procedures...

Upgrades

No problem at all with upgrade of firmware. Managed upgrade of dashboard too though found that a bit confusing. Any solutions to continued loss of access to SIM though? Still getting "problem with SIM. Remove datacard and reinsert. Reboot computer". No problem with SIM since remove and reinsert restores service.

Firmware upgrade no problem

After the basics: no sim and minimal running software, I upgraded two cards with no problems.

I'm new to 3G but it seems to work pretty decently. I've had to killl the app a few times before I switched to 3G-Only.

I've got the Novatel U630 with version 14 firmware, version 5 software and an external antenna.

Hi,

I've upgraded to firmware 14 and dashboard 5, and while I now get sometimes 4 bars (previously 2), I often find that the dashboard disconnects randomly or even resets my card now, then I have to remove and re-insert the card to get it alive again.

It almost feels less reliable now.

Anyone else experience problems like this? I'd like to actually do away with the dashboard alltogether, anyone know how to set it up like a regular dial-up?

V3G,

The Vodacom guys that came to do testing at my house today mentioned there is a version 15 firmware for the Novatel and that it is being tested.

Any ETA on that? Have you got the release notes (bug fixes)?

No ETA on V15 yet. We might actually jump V15.

The following changes were introduced in Build 15.0.

239. Enable GSM scaling compensation.
244. Support routing of unsolicited result codes.
245. Add support for the “Home Zoning” feature.
246. Add support for 3GPP-formatted response codes to the “AT+COPS” command.
251. Return an error indication if the “AT+COPS” or “AT$NWRAT” commands fail to execute.
252. Updated the list of Carrier Network Names provided by GSM.
253. Fixes a problem that resulted in the list of contacts read from a SIM being truncated if the number was very large.

Just upgraded my card (was v12) and already an improved experience.
The upgrade took all of 12 mins (yes, this idiot timed it!)

so wait .... u upgraded from ver 12 to ver 12? as that is the only version i can find on their site.(www.vodacom.co.za)

EDIT
nevermind .. im an idiot ... found the thingy ...
