After recently injuring myself with a sharp metal object (blood everywhere), I have a new found appreciation for a 1st aid kit that a loved one packed & stashed in my home for me. :)

What do you think should be in a 1st aid kit?

Kindly specify context: Paramedics kit won't be the same as a home kit.

Betadine being a topical antiseptic containing iodine. Apply generously on cuts to prevent infection.

Be warned, it stains clothing permanently.

Burn shields or gel

X1000! An absolute must.

Antihistamines (pills and cream), plasters, dressings, bandages, bactroban, eye bath with some saline, eye drops, analgesic cream and pills.

- Tweezers
- Small pair of scissors to cut bandages / dressings if need be (you would be a amazed how hard a pair of scissors are to find around the house when you really need them, so keeping a small pair with the first aid stuff is a good idea :) )

True!
Couple of safety pins too...

- Bandages (all kinds)
- Tape and safety pins
- Scissors
- Savlon or 70% isopropyl alcohol
- A lighter (heat sterilize)
- Burn shield
- Vaseline
- Gauze
- Cotton Wool
- Saline
- Sterile water
- bandaids
- tweezers
and rubber surgical tubing to tie around any limbs to stop bleeding from severe injury or some sort of belt

thats all that should be kept in a first aid kit for personal use

oh yes if you can get your hands on one you get a special mouth piece for CPR

EDIT:

If you brave you can throw in a tube of suger glue. In case of very deep cuts/injuries that require stitching you can glue it back. The surgeons use a form of surgical superglue now but I dont think its something you can get easily not sure. As I said if you brave and the situation is bad you cant stitch use the glue to buy you time to get to an ER ... though at your own risk

Iodine and bactroban ect can be used later once the injury is delt with. In case of emergency do not worry about the after effects that can be fixed once the bleeding is stopped and you have found medical attention. If your injury is not severe enough to require proper medical attention then normal common sense will do :p

For a medicine cabinet:

- Antihistamine like promethizine or aterax for spider bites and any allergies that could potentially cause a big reaction
- Bactroban / iodine
- salbutamol
- prednisone
- Ponstan
- Antibiotic course
- Maxalon (or valoid suppositories)
- rehydrate sachet x 2

make sure if you know your allergies and substitute accordingly

This is from UK websites but you can buy this from any Dischem - look in the First Aid section. It comes in patches of different sizes as well as a gel - little bit pricy but works like a bomb

[Burn shield]
hmm never heard of it tbh - will look into it. Quick google seems to suggest that its tea tree oil based.

Shot. Thanks RiaX.

I think I'll stick to tourniquets for the extreme situations (hospital is 2.5k away) and let the pros handle such situations but I'll ask my (well stocked) GP about surgical superglue anyway - just because I can.

Bottle of Whiskey. Serves many purposes :D
Would be wasted on wounds though.

Well its not a formal part of a first aid kit its used mainly for places you cant stitch. Common injury is the knife slips and cuts the fingers deep and hits an artery. If your arteries are cut its very difficult to stop the bleeding but yeah tourniquets will be fine too

LOL i forgot latex gloves :erm:

Most of the above, super glue, and duck tape.

I've got a small bottle of liquid bandaid but that stuff stings and stinks.

Burn shields or gel

Second.

I still have a scar from 2 or 3 years ago burning my arm on the inside of an oven. Would have helped if I actually had some burn gel.

Also my nephew burnt his hand on a stove plate. Twice. Luckily for him we had a burn gel.

EDIT: I also think having a good hand sanitizer would be wise.

I agree with this

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all,

I promised the OP I'd reply - but I'm exhausted (been awake 15 hours now) and I keep promises so here is my reply;

I have a first aid kit at home which doubles as my 'events' aid kit (take it to events and such) and in it, I have the following;

BIG JIM BOX! :)

Sun tan lotion
After sun spray
Rehidrates
Vaporub
Arnica massage gel
Plasters (kids type - small and large)
bandages (couple of sizes)
Space blankets
Burn shields (small ones, and 1 big one)
herbal cooling gel
Hand wipes
ear buds
gauze (100x100)
Thermometer
tampons (lots of uses for this!)
ladies pads (with wings! haha - yes, you never know when a lady might need it)
savlon
bactroban
anthisan cream
Mylocort cream
deep heat rub
eye gene
tweezers
little scissors
alcohol swabs
nail clippers

Then I have medications;
Panados
Allergex
Valoids
Gavison
Rennies
Throat lozingers
Asprin

With meds, remember to know what they do and remember the expiry dates - if you don't know what you doing, rather keep them out.

I think that's about it... but I might have missed something.

Remember, a first aid kit is not only to help yourself and your immediately (in house family) but you never know when you might need it outside of the house and I believe, the more prepared you are, the better.
