Hi guys, hope all is good. I want to buy a nice little camera for the wife and myself. Not these big camera's with seperate lenses etc, just the small point and shoot.

I would like it to have the following;

-very good quality photos
-future proof (atleast for a while)
-it would be nice if I could buy an underwater case for it should I need to(not a major point but will be nice)
-rechargeable battery that lasts
-budget friendly(willing to pay more if its an excellent camera)

We only want the camera because we got married this month and we went on honeymoon and we had to borrow someones camera. We also don't take any kind of proffesional photos etc.

Hope someone would be able to show me in the right direction$

Thanks

Biggest question is what is your budget, you say budget proof but that doesn't mean much!

Canon S95/S100... it was my first camera and it takes really nice shots in any light with a a lot of manual control if you want to dabble in the nitty gritty of photography.

Brilliant little P&S. I think the S105 was recently released?

Yea that's exactly what I was going to suggest, but it's hardly a budget camera! I have the S95, great little camera only really take out my DSLR when I go on holiday!

I would suggest a good bridge camera. I had a fujifilm S3300, and it was a nice camera, with 26 zoom, could take decent photos.

I would say if your budget can allow it, get a Lumix. Otherwise maybe something like a Canon Powershot G15

I agree with tiaanels, get one of the cameras in the Panasonic Lumix range - I have one and it's great! Such amazing quality photos and shots videos in HD. But what's your budget? I paid R4500 for mine
Mine has like 21xzoom, depth of focus, tons of effects and easy to carry :)

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, will have a look at them all. I forgot to mention my budget is max R5000. I don't need a camera that has too many manual settings etc, we just want one that takes really nice photos and video and pplain forward point and shoot.

Dion Wired has the Sony Cybershot W690 P&S currently on special for R1500...way under your budget but still worth a look IMO.

I also suggest a bridge camera. I have the Canon SX40 and can not fault it so far.
The new SX50 was released a couple of weeks ago and is within your budget if you shop around a little.

What about the samsung WB850F? Its going for R3300

You're not serious are you? It's good entertainment for sure but it hardly offers a balanced review.

Yes I am serious, what is wrong with the site? I posted it here as I believe that it is one of the few sites where you can make some decent comparisons between different makes and types of cameras. As stated.... "A very good site to compare..." I said nothing about reviews.

Ok which one? Samsung WB850F, sony cybershot bridge camera or canon sx240hs?

When I was comparing Canon to Nikon DSLR's I found a lot of misinformation on snapsort.
All sorts of specs were wrong like Canon DSLRs with built in auto-focus motors.

If you're looking for something super-small and compact there are a lot of options, and you won't need to spend R5000 on a straight forward point & shoot. A compact camera around 5k will give you advanced features and such. You could pick up a decent mik-en-druk for around 2k.

If you don't mind something a little bit bulkier, I strongly recommend the Canon SX40IS. Or even the 30IS if you can find it (it will cost less). They are amazing bridge cameras with a LOT of zoom so you can get ANY shot from close up to far away. My mom and dad are not very camera-literate and my mom has owned the 20IS, the 30IS and it takes great photos, even when she insists on zooming in on that pigeon's eye in that tree 100m away using Digital zoom.

The most important things when buying a camera are the battery, the ISO range, the optical zoom and then the megapixels. Try to take something with 10-12 MPx (you don't need 16 or 20 or 24) and the more optical zoom, the better. Digital Zoom is a No-No. In fact, sommer turn it off. Rechargeable AA batteries are getting better and better but I still vote for a built-in battery pack in a camera over a penlight battery.

You could probably grab any of the cameras on this page: http://www.dionwired.co.za/photographic-optics/photographic/point-and-shoot-cameras.html?p=1 and it would serve you well.
