Hi all

Just finished my degree and will be working as a junior developer starting next year. However, I can no longer rely on my parents' cars so I need to buy my own.

My budget is around R120k to R135k. The car will mainly be used for commuting in Pretoria (roughly 40km/day.)

Now I'll be honest, I have my heart set on a second hand 2016 Hyundai Grand i10 Fluid for around R135k at a Hyundai dealership. It has relatively low mileage (46k) and the balance of the 7-year factory warranty. For me, the biggest pull is the warranty, it seems like a good idea to buy a car with around 4 years left of its warranty. The 1.25-litre engintjie does not wow but seems to serve its purpose in the city.

However, I am not a car person and that is why I'm making this post.

Am I getting in over my head? Should I even be looking at such new cars for my first car? The R135k price tag is already stretching what I am willing to pay for a car. I realise by knocking down a few years and adding kilos, I can get a much nicer car but without the warranty. Am I maybe placing too much emphasis on the warranty? A car is not an investment but is it sensible to pay a bit more now for a car that will (hopefully?) be worth something a few years down the line when I inevitably want to move to something with slightly more power?

Due to a recent accident while on my parents' insurance, my premiums will be quite a lot as well, so that is something I need to keep an eye on.

Any life advice or car recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Toyota, anyone which was well taken care of. If it wasn't you'll spend cheaply on quick and easy fixes.

Recently bought my daughter a 2012 Hyundai I10 1.25 with only 46K km for R85000 from We Buy Cars. It was slightly over retail, but in mint condition. very low km's and full service history. No warranty or maintenance plan, but I was willing to take that risk for the saving in purchase price and insurance

How about something like previous gen Toyota Aygo, R135k I think you can also fine Suzuki Swift 1.4 but the is nothing wrong with Hyundai grand i10.

Even though Chevrolet is out of the country you can still get parts and service at Isuzu. Maybe look at Chevrolet sonic you can get one for R110k.

Hyundai i10 is sweet, especially with their very long warranties. I used one as a rental for a month when my mother in law was down and needed to borrow a car.

Hyundai i30, i20 very reliable cars and fuel efficient. Maybe avoid anything with a turbo. Toyota also has a good lineup for first time buyers.

Good point. Avoid turbo as your first runaround, especially if you dont care about cars. non-turbo cars inherently a bit slower, but way more reliable, simpler and cheaper to run, especially out of warranty

My wife's Fiat 500 has been very reliable since 2012. Good on fuel and low hijack risk. Avoid servicing by the dealer. There is an independent mechanics called Turbonutter in Pretoria.

A good 500 is around R100k

In the new year 2019, i am actually looking at getting the wife a nice neat low kilo Hyundai Grand I10.

I am actually in the same shoes as you, I am also looking to buy a first car for R120-130k I am looking at a 2016 second hand polo vivo saw one at mastercar for R139k the dealer says he can give it to me for 130 it has 55K kilos on it...not sure if it’s a good buy..

Very good cars, wouldnt touch personally due to how high risk it is.

A good rule of thumb was always to avoid French (Peugeot, Renault, Citroen.) Cant go wrong with Japanese eg. Toyota Yaris or Etios, maybe even a Corolla Quest if you don't mind something a bit bigger. Korean is also good like the Kia Picanto or the Hyundai i10 Grand, they have improved drastically over the years with regards to reliability and service.

VWs are overpriced and you get nothing in it ...

Get a kia rio or hyundai i20 or i10

much more car for price

The one positive is vw retain their value incredibly well. They're just lacking in features for their price point as you mentioned.

Have to agree with this man right here. Also had a 500 from 2011 untill 2015 and it was perfect. Gave 18km/l all day and not a single thing was replaced except tires and services at 30 000 km intervals. Did a lot of long distance trips too (PTA - CPT) and was no problem. Gave the car to my parents and they drove it the last couple of years before selling it when they retired. Most underrated small car in the country.

ive actually narrowed it down to a few more cars:
Mazda 2 (2007-2014)
aygo/c1/107
Yaris
suzuki Alto/ celerio
honda Jazz
Diahatshu cuore /sirion
Hyundai I10/I20/ getz
Mitsubishi mirage.

some might be in a lower price bracket, and some might be in a higher.

Can't go wrong with the Kia or Hyundai options OP.

Especially since you are buying second hand and someone else sucked up the depreciation.

Forget the Aygo/c1/107 horrible interior and the Mirage...you need to get out and push the car, it is so slow
The others are perfectly fine, i would prefer the Jazz just because of space.
