genetic : it wasn't neccessary in a black and white world... but upgrading DIA could only get them so far, so it was a case of bite the bullet now for x amount.. or spend x upgrading DIA.. then have to spend more building a new airport elsewhere ANYWAY in a few years time...

I'm glad they've done it now... KSIA is a beautiful airport, and when its all up and running properly it won't just be an airport, there are aspects of it that could be a general meeting place for people.
 
Sorry ToxicBunny, I actually meant that the construction of KIA was very necessary, DIA, as you say, could only be upgraded to a certain extent.

Ahhh yes.. it was necessary.. or at least it would have been very shortly had they not started when they did.....

I saw the costings for upgrading DIA, and then the future there after.. it made NO financial sense to upgrade DIA...
 
Durban is probably the most important city outside of Johannesburg. Yes I'm Capetonian, but in terms of the harbour and logistical marriage Durban has with Johannesburg (being the biggest economy in Africa), KIA is probably the biggest asset Durban has besides it's harbour.

I've seen the future plans for the airport, and they're planning BIG... very very big....

Never realised how busy the airports get until today, sky is full of frigging planes.

PLEASE tell us ALL how much ACSA spent LAST YEAR on upgrading DIA -- you know -- INCLUDING those fancy car parking building.
When the EIA was ALREADY on the cards if not the table

HOW MUCH of that is going to be used NOW ?????

You clearly need to learn to read MW....

To do short term expansion of DIA would have cost R1.6b....
To do long term expansion of DIA to operate till 2025 at most would have cost R10.6b with a maximum capacity of 14mppa, and then they would have HAD to move the airport anyway since they wouldn't be able to physically expand it any further. DIA is also unable to take the A380, and has NO Code F stands and would have been unable to have any at any point in the future, whereas KSIA can take the A380 now has 2 Code F stands currently with plans to expand that to at least 10.

If they had decided to upgrade DIA to its maximum capacity of 14mppa, THEN move to KSIA it would have cost 386% of the current cost.

So instead they bit the bullet and moved the airport now for a cost of R7.2b with a current capacity of 7mppa and a planned current maximum of 45mppa....

Please tell me HOW you see this as a bad thing.

and DUR for Durban.
 
the ICAO code for La Mercy is FALE. F being for Southern African region, A being for South Africa, and the LE being for La Mercy. FALM couldn't be used because its taken by AFB Makhado, and FALA is taken by Lanseria, so FALE was the next choice... after that would be FALR which I reckon people also would have been able to take issue with.... :)

The IATA code is the same as the old airport.. it is still DUR

Went to KSIA yesterday for the first time to pick me mum up... Took 25 minutes from Pinetown to get there, Thats with the slow traffic around the Inanda Rd / N2 / Umgeni Rd construction at about 14H20. So not too bad. Found parking easily enough, not up to the same spec as OR Tambo - no nice lighting system to show full / empty parkings. The Domestic arrivals waiting area is a little bigger, but still only 30 chairs for people to sit and wait :( Other than that its is way better than the old one ... I must say tho, the tollgate to get back onto the N2 is a bit of a cheek! I feel that we have had to travel further, not by choice, we should not have also pay Toll fees now?!?!
