Went to KSIA yesterday for the first time to pick me mum up... Took 25 minutes from Pinetown to get there, Thats with the slow traffic around the Inanda Rd / N2 / Umgeni Rd construction at about 14H20. So not too bad. Found parking easily enough, not up to the same spec as OR Tambo - no nice lighting system to show full / empty parkings. The Domestic arrivals waiting area is a little bigger, but still only 30 chairs for people to sit and wait :( Other than that its is way better than the old one ... I must say tho, the tollgate to get back onto the N2 is a bit of a cheek! I feel that we have had to travel further, not by choice, we should not have also pay Toll fees now?!?!

Don't fret the Airports company is also pi$$ed with the toll but the operators of the N2 already have rights to toll the road so they stuck a booth up. There was a lot of news about it when they decided to toll it. The airports company don't get any income from that toll booth.
 
Is there no alternative route to the airport other than the toll route? How much are the toll fees?
 
There are alternate routes , I don't know the toll fees haven't been there.
 
Strange that a car guard has never spat in my face when I've offered them nothing..

My car is insured, so why the hell must I pay extra for the priviledge of not having him look after my car?

As for the alternate routes, there is one onto the R102 and its not tolled, but the road is a shocker :(

You see -- as a very young youngster I can remember Louis Botha Airport way back when there was NOTHING between you and the aircraft except for a low brick wall.

Yeah, I also asked for the viewing deck .... sigh... :( Kinda does make it more "clinical" without any view of the planes.

You are not a kid anymore and also earoplanes and flying are no longer a novelty that they once were.
Nowadays, you shouldn't hang out at airports viewing aeroplanes take off and land, else you might just get blown up by extremists.

He informs me that he CANNOT inform me as to the time of the OFFICIAL opening of FALE tomorrow

Oh my gud! Now we even have people bitching about an airport not having any soul! Damn, is there anything people cannot complain about? Wait don't bother answering that, some of the posts in this thread already do! :rolleyes:

We want progress. But we don't want to be inconvenienced. We want new infrastructure. But we don't want any of "our" money spent. And on and on it goes... blah blah blah
 
@Lancelot, I think the thing is, us Durbanites are still laid back and are not as rushed & super serious - get from point A to B as fast as possible without distractions or annoyances - like Gautengers are. We kinda like to kick back a bit and watch the rush go by. So KISA is very functional and modern. It will work just as it was planned and probably with extreme efficiency, but us bois in our baggy pants, slip slops (if we even bother putting them on) who wanna just check out that cool green cigar tube going down the runway at about 200km/h before pulling up into the great blu sky...... just because its lekka! Well, we can't. Some of us liked that about DIA, others didn't care. I feel it was a cool to watch, no I never went there specifically to do that, but when ever is Kulula on time?? Got to find something to keep oneself occupied with....

Unlike you, I have got a lot more things to fill out my day...:D

Here's a short-list of grown up things I would recommend that will ensure that you leave "Jumbo Jet Watching" to the kidios.

1. Get yourself in top physical shape
2. Get laid (more often)
3. Join a church or synagogue or temple
4. Volunteer your time and expertise
5. Turn off the TV (unless you are watching Discovery Channel or National Geographic) and read some books
6. Get a pet from the local animal shelter
7. Try gardening
8. Declutter your home
9. Go back to school either for fun or to broaden your skill base or both
10. Try painting or anything crafty
