If you want to get a good idea of how the iPad performs, check the PC Mag video.
I must iPad looks very very responsive, and the animations are austoundingly smooth and fast, it must be the SSD tech combined with a decent CPU, good GPU and well-optimized software.

I know what you mean... I still don't know what for though :-/

lol. I know exactly what I want it for:
1: Book reading. Better than e-ink. I never liked e-ink anyway, boring greyscale rubbish.
2: Blogs
3: magazine subscriptions - WSJ, Reuters
4: gaming
5: general surfing
6: reference material - the periodic table app looks incredible. 3d rotatable elements. It's the new encyclopedia.

The only thing it CAN'T do well for my general daily needs is serve as an mp3 player but whose phone can't do that these days anyway? I have a very powerful PC to do my actual work on - who wants to work on an netbook anyway? Maybe you do - not me.

What's wrong with the ipod app? Or is it because of the size of the ipad?

It is possible to work on Netbooks. My VersaPro has a 1.86 GHz Atom CPU and a 64GB Toshiba SSD which means it's faster than many Intel i7 desktop machines for certain tasks. It also won't break if I drop it and I could pack it with my baggage or squish it in a crowd. No worries. The iPad will fail in those conditions. Then again, the iPad is not for work, unless work is reading tons of articles but even there e-ink display is a thousand times better. You know mineral water is sometimes better although not as flashy as Dom Pérignon and for taking your medicines and rehydrating after gym - mineral water is better than a $700 Dom Pérignon. Same with the iPad - e-ink is just so much better. The iPad is a cute toy but - no, thank you.

That's nice Peter, but some of us will have a use for the iPad. It's going to be a fixture in my studio and will perform as a multitouch controller for cubase/logic and various plugins. That alone makes it worth it for me, not a toy at all.

Yeah I use my iTouch in the gym a lot. iPad wouldn't do for that. But that goes with the size, not much could be done about that. Although I could imagine bluetooth headphones for this. But like I said, any decent phone will have sufficient mp3 capabilities for me.

Same with the iPad - e-ink is just so much better. The iPad is a cute toy but - no, thank you.

Have you seen the Reuters magazine app, or the periodic elements? Try doing any of that with your Kindle. And imagine what future applications will be able to do with the level of interactivity the iPad offers. In that respect it slaughters e-ink. The only promising transreflective e-book screen technology for me is PixelQI's, but the image quality of its backlit mode is only really comparable to a mid-range laptop screen. As for it being a toy, you know what - my iTouch is an incredibly useful 'toy' as well, so that's fine with me.

Beg to differ PeterCH, the iPad has a lot of good things going for it - IPS screen, and super fast interface are my 2 biggest personal pluses.

I wanna import one!

Ooh I need one. I wonder when Vodacom will get the 3g version though (considering it needs a micro sim - this could be a prob for vodacom).
Any estimates on what it will cost when it reaches us?

Probably more like R6000 for the base model. Some blogger (do a quick google search) looked at the current za pricing of apple products and concluded it will be somewhere between R5300 to R7000, hence ~R6000.

Should be around R4000 to R4500 if you buy it in the US/UK/EU and bring it over. If I can somehow get the money together, I'll ask someone to buy it overseas.

Damnit, I want one. :(

I have a use for a Ipad, we want to be able to communicate with the pastor in our church or at least he wants to sometimes communicate with us without saying something so that will be our use for it, also to give him general announcements etc, then no paper gets wasted...
