Hi guys, m planning on buying my first car at the end of July, m looking at a pre-owned car.
Im thinking of the chev cruze or kia soul,, any advices are welcome. I have been discouraged from buying a toyota or a VW car cos I stay in soweto n the tsotsis ask for those cars at gun point.
Please tell me about the extra costs and give me points on how to negotiate for a great deal for myself. Looking forward to the advices guys.

:) cool,, but what about the extra costs that m gonna be faced with? How do I negotiate? What do I say ?

First you need to know how much does the car cost on the market so that you can tell between a good deal and a bad deal, as soon as you have this information you can then bargain, the best weapon at the bargaing table is to know your story, so do you homework, research the prices, the mileage associated with the price ranges, the model derivatives and how they differ in price, e.g a higher spec Kia Soul versus the low spec.

Negotiations depends on the car, the condition as well as the price, going back to what i said above, you have to know how much something cost for you to negotiate effectively, e.g it does not make sense to negotiate on a price that is way cheaper than what is the going price on the market. Just note that the price you see usually excludes the so called, "on the road costs", that is where you will be scammed, negotiate on those and ask for a breakdown of the costs and see if they make sense to you, e.g a car that is initially priced at R50k can easily balloon to R60k when those are added. Also note that you still need to put some money aside for insurance out of your budget. The most important aspect of negotiating is not to be afraid to walk away, don't be desperate, plenty of cars on sale, shop around.

First you need to tell everyone what's your budget and what the car will be used for

Secondly while we wait some extra costs to consider, hollard extended warranty, fuel, insurance and yearly service(some cars only require servicing every 2 years)

.. What do I say ?

I want that one.

First of all how much you want to spend on the car. How old is your driving license as this will also play a role in your budget. You need to get service& maintenance plan.

As a first time car buyer I would say start small with something reliable like Toyota Aygo, Ford Figo or Honda Jazz. I like Honda it can be stolen but chances of that happening are slim. But staying in Kasi mchana don't touch VW.

But if you want to buy VW Polo Vivo you can go ahead and buy it mchana. Just make sure you take comfortable shoes and a warm jacket just in case you find yourself converted to a pedestrian.

Why?

Also it's one or the other, not both.
