Fishtank Mod

The oil will have to be cooled for that too work ;)

The same as the air moves out your case (hopefully) and new cool air enters your case, same thing will have to be done here. If the oil isn't cooled sufficiently then the whole thing is just going to keep heating up.

It has been done many times before and one of guys tested it for an extended period of time and that's the results he got. ;)

So in short, yes it will work, but not for long term unless the oil is cooled.

Interesting...How would one go about keeping the oil cooled the whole time then?

Depends what you're trying to achieve.

If it's for a permanent solution, a radiator, pump and fan could probably work. But then you've got to ask yourself, is it really worth it? :P

And the answer is not really :p

Could put the whole thing in a fridge as well for a similar effect I guess :o

Just watched the video - it do look good.

A few points to note -

1. how long does mineral oil last? (how often does it have to be replaced?)
2. what do you do when the PSU pops? Or you want to upgrade your CPU?

That's really cool, though I still wouldn't want to try it, even with the old stuff. Though I'm quite curious , might just do it actually, got an old P4 lying around :p

I wouldn't do i with a P4. I'm PC less until December so I wouldn't waste a PC until then. So if anyone has a P4 they want to try it with lend it to me 1st until then :) . I do think this could be a awesome project though. and it would be worth it if you could "up" a P3 to 2.8GHz

Interesting. It was said here that the oil would eventually heat up in the tank. I suppose this is true but Im thinking that there is a large surface area where the oil is in contact with the sides of the fish tank. This probably causes heat transfer from the oil to the glass and then to the atmosphere. The hottest the tank should then get is room temp?

I also think the fans in the tank help circulate the oil aiding this. I would worry about the fans though, they are designed to push air not much heavier oil so they would be taking much more strain and the motors would fail pretty quickly I would think.

I would strip out the fans from the PSU etc and devise something else to move the oil around.

I think you should put fan specifically created for liquid or maybe just set the speeds lower to reduce strain

That is what I was thinking as well. Those fans should be taking the strain from the friction of pushing around oil and not air. But seeing as they were designed to move the air around to keep everything cool, surely they are not needed if the whole thing is drowned in oil anyway? It's not like moving the oil around keeps it cool...

I think circulating oil would have the same affect as circulating air just in a slower form so the hot oil doesn't all "float" around the CPU or GFX card.

Awesome, so all you have to do is get a radiator and there you go the most powerful P3 ever or you can run it at high over clocked speeds for a hour at a time.
