Five Midrand joggers killed

That's really sad!

Hope they nail the bugger!

I doubt it.
The police probably never took the blood within the proper time, if at all.
Looking at the serious money or influence involved with ownership of the ML-500, the driver has more than likely already received a proposal about the disappearance of the docket.

Same thing happened in Somerset West earlier this year when a Merc smashed a smaller car off the road, killing the driver. Cannot remember all the details except that the driver was not detained by SAPS and Daddy later seems to have pulled a few strings so that nothing further happened.

The silver Mercedes-Benz ML500 rammed into the group of runners preparing for next month's Soweto Marathon shortly after 6am on the corner of Olifantsfontein and Lever roads in Midrand, Johannesburg.

I'm a jogger I stay on the side walk where possible. Where there is not I run as close to the side of the road as possible.

I have not seen people that run all over the road, but saying that I love the solitude of jogging. Which will probably could get me killed as well.

This is sad. As a pedestrian. I have right of way. The road is not made for cars only.

I know the area; north - south bound connecting Samrand to Midrand. There is a steep decline if you're coming from Samrand & although there is a stop street, Stretliza to turn into Country View; drivers rarely stop there & speed downhill onto Olifantsfontein!
Just for the record at 2pm yesterday (Sunday); there was another accident between car & taxi barely 200m from previous crash site!
Lack of proper law enforcing has given drivers the green light to do as they please on our roads! Until the guvamunt comes out of its slumber - this will continue to happen!

sorry but Disagree if that is the law or needs to be changed. The road is dangerous and pedestrians have no place on it as fast moving tons of metal could and will kill them

Unfortunately the law hasn't changed and runners and cyclists currently do have as much right to the road as cars. As a runner I do my utmost to get onto the verge if there is no sidewalk when there are cars coming, but it blows the mind what douches some drivers can be towards runners.

That being said, when doing big training runs in large groups, I wont deny that there sometimes is a herd mentality, and I have been as guilty as many in taking up more that the road than I should have. I guess its a stark reminder to keep alert and mindful of other users on the road.

Change the laws, change the laws. Enforce the bloody law. The idiot was so drunk that he could not stand up straight.

Pedestrians have right of way, when all people have cars and nobody has any need to walk we can start changing the law.

One mistake some joggers make is running on the left side of the road.

As a cyclist you generally have to take up and aggressively defend your space. Give motorists even a tiny bit of leeway and they'll force you off the road. Interestingly motorists may take more risks around cyclists wearing helmets because like the cyclists themselves they erroneously believe those things protect against serious head injuries.

Still believe that zero tolerance should apply to drinking and driving - i.e. blood alcohol level = 0%
Overkill.

just that there was excessive speeding (but ja, many people on here just won't listen).
What's excessive speed?

That's just terrible.

That's what you get when you drink and drive. No sympathy for the driver at all.

I live by the phrase "if it's more massive than me, it chooses who has right of way". Basic physics.

Agreed, just Google for some videos along the lines of "pedestrian squashed by....." and you will see why this philosophy is a good idea!

It is so sad - one would think that if you have the money to get a car like that you'd have the brains on how to drive it properly and being under the influence isn't one of the criteria - unless of course the driver didn't actually work for the privilege to own such a car - like a government subsidized car or something like that.

I think for the rest of his life he should pay compensation to the families and should never be allowed to benefit from anything society has to offer. he should lose all assets and they should be given to the victims

He should also be placed under supervision that if he ever drinks or drives again he will be locked up and the key thrown away.

For the rest of his life he must pay and suffer to remind him and others of what stupidity brings.

Horrible incident. It would be nice to see more running and cycling paths where it is safe to run/cycle...

Completely agree.
Until your kid's drunk.
You kidding me right? If I had kids and I caught the little **** drinking and driving, there would be no more drinking as there would be no more driving, maybe the issue is how people are brought up ;)

A good assumption anywhere else in the world but in our rainbow nation BEE, AA, skin colour etc guarantee that normal requirements are excluded.

Tony Yengeni and his ML - (350 I think) immediately spring to mind, twice as I recall.

Juliarse has a Range Rover (which he has admitted was given to him) and, although not in the same class as the ML, is in the same price bracket so one cannot say that brains play any part in the possession.
