A Johannesburg lawyer was allegedly drunk when he ploughed his car into twelve pedestrians near Sun City in the North West, killing five and seriously injuring another seven, the Beeld reported on Wednesday..

The lawyer, 35, appeared in the Mogwase Magistrate's Court on Tuesday and has been released on bail of R10 000.

Police have not yet released the name of the suspect.

North West police spokesman Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the accident happened in Ledig, an informal settlement about 5km from the Sun City hotel and casino complex, on the R556 access route on Monday.

According to reports, the lawyer was in his BMW X6 when he hit 12 pedestrians who are thought to have been walking home from a nearby shebeen.

The victims who were not killed on impact were all seriously injured, and were taken to the nearby Moses Kotane hospital, Ngubane said.

The lawyer, who was arrested at the scene and taken into custody, was allegedly drunk, alone in the vehicle and speeding.

The victims who died at the scene were Paulos Lefekane, 23, Tumelo Lekoba, 20, Thabo Dipoe, 25, Joyce Yende and Solomon Mokgosi.

The lawyer was charged with driving under the influence and culpable homicide, Ngubane said.

After the Jub Jub case I thought all intoxicated drivers were going to be charged with murder. Silly on my part. :o

Does anyone have any updates about what happened to this case? Was he convicted or let off. Would be nice if journalists actually followed this case to the end.

Last story I got is from Sept 2013

Rustenburg -

A lawyer accused of running over and killing seven pedestrians appeared briefly in the Mogwase Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The trial of Mandla Gumbi, 35, was postponed to January 17 for final investigation.

The State requested this for it to obtain a mechanical analysis report from a German expert and a report reconstructing the accident.

Gumbi allegedly hit 12 pedestrians in Ledig near Rustenburg in April. Five people died at the scene and two died in hospital.

He was allegedly drunk and speeding when he drove his BMW X6 through the crowd. He faces charges of culpable homicide and of driving under the influence.

Dressed in a black suit and a white shirt, he held his hands behind his back listening to the State requesting postponement.

He arrived at the court in a black Hummer driven by a bodyguard.

His family accompanied him to court. - Sapa

Is this still needed, "The State requested this for it to obtain a mechanical analysis report from a German expert and a report reconstructing the accident. " if he was allegedly drunk? And why the bodyguard?
