What's the best way to play .flac on an iPhone?

I'm just setting it up as I usually just play mp3 or acc or whatever, but I've got a hold of a few flac albums and fancy playing them without being converted or downgraded *too* much.

So I see iTunes doesn't support them but there are a few apps available. Now I don't mind paying a buck or two for a decent app, but for example there's one at $10 which is a bit much to fork out if it's no good. Anyone used any or have any other tips or experience to share?

Rather reencode them to 520kbps mp3 using an encoder of your choice. That update frequency is above human hearing "refresh rate" so there is no difference to audio quality :) (most people consider 320kbps about the limit of human hearing, so 520kbps is way overkill)

Interesting. I'll look into that and maybe even try a bit of 520 vs 320 to see if I can tell the difference. Thanks.

So I assume the files will copy over to iTunes as flac, then just load them directly onto VLC rather than a normal music transfer to the default player?

Haven't tried them myself but I believe that's how it would work yeah.

VLC is very polished these days. You can also use http to transfer over wifi from pc to idevice.

Sweet. I'll give that a bash.

That's cool

320kbps MP3 is the highest bitrate supported by MP3. AAC is actually a superior codec to MP3 and I would say 256kbps AAC is the sweet spot.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried a couple of apps including those suggested, but settled on TuneShell which has a nice interface and a great feel to it.

I'll see how I go with the flac player but good info for the future, cheers.
