hey guys,
i got me a Kingston data traveller gen 3 16gb usb drive.
i got it today at work and i tried copying a few files with the pc at work but it would keep disconnecting and connecting while copying. sometimes it takes 10 sec to disconnect and sometimes it will take 10 mins to disconnect but as soon as it disconnects it connects showing the autoplay menu.

my work mate can copy files on the same usb ports with no problems(we tested)
my other usb had no problems about a week ago till i lost it.

i just tested the new flash drive at home and it copies files fine on my pc and my chicks laptop.

takealot have sent me an email saying that they have accepted my warranty request but have to test the item 1st which they probably wont find any faults bec its only the work pc that does this?

any one know what could be causing this?

its a usb 2 drive and on windows 7.
Thanks

Hmm... Is formatting the PC out of the question?

Might be a software issue.

You could also try updating all your drivers from the
mobo's manufacturer site.

Are you sure that the USB plug (flash drive) is making good contact with the socket (PC)? Try to plug the flash drive into a short USB extension cable to see if that helps. You can purchase a 30cm extension cable for about R6 from Zaps, Ikonicit etc.

It sounds to me like the USB drive isn't getting enough power or that it isn't making good contact.
My colleague is also having the same kind of issues with some of his portable HDDs on his office laptop.

Do you know which portable drives are giving problems? It seems that some brands need more power than others and normally require a Y-cable. The large Toshiba 2.5" drives (Toshiba, Freecom, Verbatim? portable drives) seem to generally work off only one port and a short cable. I have a 320GB Samsung 2.5" portable drive which needs power from two ports to work reliably.

Hey guys.
It seems to be a short or something on the front usb ports.
We tested the back/mobo usb ports and it works fine.
But its still funny how my friend can copy using the front ones but i cant.

Some of the gold fingers inside the USB plug on the flash drive seem to be more recessed than others and don't make good enough contact with some worn USB sockets on the PC. I often have problems with one of my Transcend flash drives dropping out. Using a short USB extension cable solves the problem.

I know that my Vizo Luxon Super SD (USB3) drive is also giving me issues in my laptop, where I have to plug it in in a very specific way, otherwise the drive is unrecognised. That drive of mine only works in my colleague's laptop if he removes the laptop from the docking station.

His drive that does not want to work at all with his laptop is the Media Standard: ZC-QB120 3.5".

Are you sure that the front USB ports are connected properly to the motherboard? If the back ones work, then it could be that someone hasn't installed the front ones properly... been known to happen.

Hey guys i have the same problem accept the stick does this in all pc's is there a way to fix or is it a lost cause
