Flatscreen : white levels

Here is my take on the situation.

If you are in a dark room, you will notice better black levels. If you are in a bright room, you will notice brighter white levels.
If you are in a bright room, even dark grey will seem pitch black. If you are in a dark room, even light grey will seem bright white.

I think you guys are underestimating the role the brightness in the room plays in how our eyes interpret a TV picture.

Fully agreed. Hence LCD is recommended for bright rooms, and plasma for dark rooms.

But let's be honest here. Rooms are going to be dark[er] the majority of the time.

I think they mean white, more than bright.

On my old CRT TV I thought the white was no issue afterall, white was white. Until I hooked SCART RGB and the white was even whiter.
Same as my cellphone screen ; whites look white ... until compared next to another better phone.
Same as my plasma ; whites look white ... until compared next to an LCD

That's my experience *shrug*

JUGGY - surely you must agree that the answer to everything can't be Sony or plasma?
Are you aware how many people have changed and are happy?

That alone should tell you it's not nearly as clear cut as people believe and - if it was - one technology would simply die. The fact alone that LCD started behind plasma, overtook and knocked a few brands out the game would make me think 'perhaps there is something'

The amount of time I've read :

motion? plasma!
black? plasma!
white? plasma!
quality? plasma!
gaming? plasma!
SD? plasma!
HD? plasma!
DVD? plasma!
BR? plasma!
how are you? plasma!

Are you sick in the head?
Are you telling me you don't recommend plasma?
Have you never recommended the STR500?

You're known as the super pro plasma boy fora reason!

Are you sick in the head?

Nope.

But let's be more objective. Let's ask other forumites: Am I sick in the head?

Are you telling me you don't recommend plasma?

I recommend plasma when it suits the OP. How does that infer that plasma is the answer for everything?

Have you never recommended the STR500?

I recommend the STR-500 when the OP and their budget, and they want the best bang for buck. How does that infer that Sony is the answer for everything?

You're known as the super pro plasma boy fora reason!

I am?

I love how you hold my opinion in such high esteem that you equate my recommending something based on needs/purposes/budget to the be-all and end-all of everything when budget is not a limiting factor. :)

Appreciate the compliment.

But I think you are truly the sick one!

The time has come for you to put the buyer's remorse behind you...and get a plasma.

 :D

Clown! Look, honestly, I've always been absolutely pro plasma (and sad to admit, very negative towards LCD) ... and still have nothing against plasma, my main movie night panel is a plasma, but LCD really have caught up and at the higher end I would actually recommend LCD these days. There really is no more night and day differences between the two techs when it comes to picture quality, but LCD brings some other advatages with it that just makes the overall package a better deal for me. Believe me, I've seen Dolby's panel and there is definitely no buyer's remorse there.

Bought the ps42c430 for R5,799 and it's the best tv i've ever seen, better than v series sony lcd in brightness and black level..

You don't see me punting anything in specific so probably not a good idea to drag me into this.

I use Plasma for TV purposes and LCD for computer type purposes.

I like getting more screen for my money and prefer the colour that Plasma delivers.

Personal perferences and I certainly don't push them on others.

There was a wink at the end, unfortunately the forum doesn't offer a tongue-in-cheek smiley so i'll try my best to simulate :p

OK, understand your point and joke, just thought LFD is not really the correct term.

Yeah, I know. Just enjoying the ribbing these two are giving each other. Entertainment value aside, one can actually learn something in the process.

I haven't looked at specs in ages, but recently bought a PS3 so upgrading from 720P to 1808P is tempting... Non high-end prices are amazing these days - I can buy two 42" plasmas for the price I paid for mine a few years ago. :(

Apologies PP.

Now that I look at your posts closer, you're quite neutral and not nearly pro plasma as I thought

If SD/HD TV and sport are your main concerns, then you probably want to look at plasma screens

plasma is better for displaying SD/HD TV and sport (and generally speaking, plasma is a superior image technology than LCD

I have heard gaming on plasma is better than LCD, due to better contrast and response time... ;)

If SD TV is a priority (and especially sport), then you should get a plasma

Plasmas are superior for TV/sport and for the price you will get a better looking TV/sport picture than on some higher end LCDs!

Not to mention how amazing HD stuff/Blurays look on plasma - colours are richer than LCD and blacks are deeper.

but the effort is worth the superior picture quality over LCD. ;)

No LCD/LED-backlit LCD will give you as good a picture quality as your LG

LED-backlit is a gimmick and 98% the same as LCD. About the only benefit is thinner panels

But for TV and especially sport, you're going to have problems. Lucky for you the Samsung 42" HD Ready plasma (PS42C430) has come down to ±R5699 at Game Makro and it will be totally superior for TV and sport and gaming

one more reason why plasma is what I would say the best option.

LED-backlit is still 98% LCD. 100% marketing gimmick and don't be fooled. The only real difference is that LED panels are slimmer.

that is because plasma is better for SD TV and motion/sport/even gaming (not to mention that plasma as a technology has deeper blacks and richer colours

It is a fact based on the technology.

But I guarantee you for TV/sport the plasma will be the winner (for Xbox much less of a difference). In fact I will put money on it that after testing Xbox and TV, you will walk out with the plasma, finding it superior for gaming too.

TV and sport that will look better than on higher end LCDs for half the price; faster response time for sport/gaming; and not to mention the fact that plasma as a technology has better blacks and richer colours than LCD.

How much sport will you be watching? Perhaps you should still consider plasma...

fact that plasma is better for TV/sport, and as a technology produces deeper blacks and richer colours. What this means simply, is that the most expensive plasma is better for TV, sport; and produces deeper blacks and richer more accurate colours than the most expensive LCD.

higher end LCDs are at least equal to and in some cases better than mid range plasmas at things like black levels and colours.

My stance is that mid range plasma offers exceptional value for money, and will give people a better experience than similarly priced LCDs, especially those who mainly watch TV/sport, and it will compare even to some higher-end LCDs

There are some of my favourite ;)

I actually am not quite sure what is actually being said ...

... plasma is superior than high end LCD?
... plasma at the half the price is superior?
... high end LCD is equal and sometime better than mid range plasma?
... then some plasma may compare to some high end?
... WHAT?!
