'Flawed' ICT plans costing millions

Looks like I got here first for a change.

The reason for this is that business sees ICT (IT) as a cost centre and not a profit centre. Due to this, business does not allocate correctly and miss's the opportunity. (Short Term Cost Saving) I.e. Cutting head numbers and reducing spend on infrastructure, the net effect is under development.

I disagree on this point, IT cannot ever be a profit centre in and of itself. One probably needs to ask if the business could continue running wiothout the IT function? If not, as usually is the case, then you should accept that it is a key role in support of the true profit centres (sales and the like).

The best way to demonstrate this is by continually adding new facilities that people need but don't know. These facilities are about making life easier and giving better information (not a MS Office upgrade), only then do you stand any chance of having non-IT employees understand the importance of the role.

Comes back to my post in another thread - too much IT budget is spent on "coders" and not enough on Systems Analysts, Technical Writers and so on.
