Hi,

I'm planning on visiting Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA next week and would like to be able to make voice calls, sms and make use of mobile data. Do any of you perhaps know anything about this? The local vodashop wasn't very helpful. I'm currently using an HTC hero. And seeing that the roaming costs are quite excessive I was wondering if they have similar prepaid options.

I suggest that you phone Vodacom Customer Care and find out exactly how much you gonna get charged.

There was a story on Carte Blance about data roaming last week, about the excessive data charges people got charged while roaming overseas....think Canada was at the top with R135000.00 for 1GB data (I am not kidding).

Good suggestion.

According to Vodacom's website data costs R128/MB (there is no supersaver rate for the US according to the site).

Best suggestion I've seen so far is to buy a local sim and use that. You'll also find free wifi littered all over the place so make use of that and Skype. :)

I was in NYC two weeks ago and find that AT&T is horrible. Having the phone on 3G is pointless as it can not hold signal and even turning 3G off results in very poor voice-quality (regardless if it is a local or international call). Talking to the locals, they mention that with the recent launch of iPhone4 and iPads, AT&Ts 3G network is overutilised and people experience lots of dropped call. This seems to at least apply to NYC and I am not sure if it is the same elsewhere. I resulted to use Skype instead. You will actually struggle not finding free wireless hotspots, but you can always buy paid hotspot service - I did that when I was in Florida two years ago and worked very well.

I would not use data-roaming as it will set you back a few thousand Rand.

Hi , They should have a prepaid option available and that would be the one that i would go for , unless i'm being covered by my company. Roaming in USA is nothing less than R128.00 per meg

Local Calls -R 8.00 - Calls To SA - R 23.50 , Receiving a Calls - R 6.00 , Sending a SMS - R 2.75 , Data Charges - R 128.00
