Can anyone advise on how to maintain a 'relatively' constant bandwidth from ADSL (384) connection. The download speed often drops from 37kbs to 6kbs? Is it my pc setup, software / hardware, or telkom ISP?

The results from my latest speed test

Download time: 77.875 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 52.4 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 6.4 (kiloBytes/second)

If you using IS account, blame the weather. If you're using a SAIX account blame telkom. Acutally either way just blame telkom, they're at fault one way or another. Nothing to do with your pc, software or hardware.

I would guess that it depends on from where you are also trying to download, for example I dloaded from fileplanet last night from servers in the UK and the speed varied from 18kbs to 50kbs. There are a ton of variables to consider, but there are many forumites that would probably be able to provide you with a much better technical response.

I got the same thing when I was on 384.

Just ride the wave, it will pass and you will be back to average speeds.

I hope.

I'm on 4mb line and the test i just did shows the following:

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 57.235 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 71.3 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 8.7 (kiloBytes/second)

In my mind there is no reason you guys should not have speeds like this, for around R400, TOTAL cost!!! Or less for that matter.

I just ran that test and have a cable modem.

You are getting screwed just like the SA government screwed it's citizens over television. They had the technology for years but only introduced it in the early 70's. They were afraid of it. I mean editing out James Bond kissing Grace Jones in that Bond movie, that's the kind of lame dog doody they pulled all the time thinking nobody would notice. Infantile minds and they are still at work.

They see a chance to milk everyone for a lot of cash and they are hard at work on it.

These idiots need to wake up.
