FMC to cut cellular bills

Been using a similar tech for a while, and the phones are still poorly designed to handle it. Eg. My Nokia E70 doesn't automatically connect to the Wifi and re-register with SIP server as it comes into range of the hotspot, nor can it automatically shift to VoIP-over-3G when it loses wifi signal. It also doesn't gratuitously connect to other wifi networks in its access points list as they come in range.

With the Nokias, at least, VoIP over 3G/HSDPA seems like a much more viable solution. Not only is 3G signal coverage signficantly wider than Wifi, but the phone doesn't need to hand over between networks. Unfortunately, 3G data is generally more expensive than wifi.

Also, if you're using either of these (24/7 3G or Wifi), kiss your battery goodbye. Hopefully the phone makers will learn to optimise battery consumption with data...

Still, I believe this will be a viable solution pretty soon...at least as soon as the handset manufacturers make it viable.

Given the co-operative nature of the cellular providers, I'm sure they wouldn't introduce jitter or packet loss into their data network - in fact, they'd probably optimise it for this purpose - not

And look at what happens when you receive a GSM call while on a WiFi or 3G-bearer call.

You're quite correct, the stock functionality of the phone isn't sophisticated. But with a client on the phone....

Yup. I also think IS are being very optimistic if they expect to carry voice over WiFi networks. For proper campus sized deployments DECT is still your best bet.

Internet Solutions Gated Services charge the same price as cellphone companies for their ADSL based internet access in complexes... what a rip off.
